There is a small atoll with an island in it in the south pacific, if you are familiar please with the island can you tell me if you are able to sail onto the atoll and if the water inside it is deep enough for a 5 foot draft, please help!

The satellite photo shows a channel on the North shore. Go in by dinghy and check it out then you can tell everyone the answer.

This little atoll will be the best place in the world to view next week's solar eclipse. Here's a link to an expensive sailing expedition that has just left Papeete on route.
Forbes Magazine.

Also would be interesting to know if anyone, including the original poster, has ever visited. Also does the northern gap in the reef and the atoll itself provide safe haven?

No you can’t get your boat in there (there is a spot marked ‘boat passage’ on the chart but the locals say they can’t even get their longboat through there any more) but you can anchor outside and it’s beautiful according to some good friends of ours. We were anchored at Pitcairn at the time. They passed us by because the anchorage looked too sketchy at Pitcairn but had a very easy time at Oeno. I think they stayed for three days if I remember, and got some amazing footage of free-diving with humpbacks.

I'd love to have the contact details of the friends of yours who visited, please. Trying to get some more info about Oeno for a new RCCPF / Imray publication. Thanks - Jess
