Hello, my name is Oskar and I`m new here. I`ve been looking at the Colin Archer CA 40 from 1981. Does someone have information about these boats?

Do a Google search " Colin Archer CA40 " and you will pull up a lot of information and videos.

I am partial to Double Enders having one myself, a Slocum 37 based on a Colin Archer design. Mine sails like a freight train with anything over 10 knots of wind. The CA40 is built to take anything that comes her way. The only drawback that I can see is all that teak. If you are up for that, go for it. I would feel confident sailing that boat anywhere.

Thank you for the response. l can't find information where the boats were built and who manufactured them. I live in Sweden and my plan is to have the boat as a fulltime home. We get ice here in the winter and I would like to leave the boat in the water all year ( if possible) I've heard that these boats hull is built to be freezed into the ice, can that be correct?

Why would they claim that the boat was designed by someone who died in 1921?

I guess maybe it was. Seems odd that with all that's been learned from computer modeling and experience that they would still be building boats designed at the turn of the century.

Any boat should bee seen in the aspect of who, why and how designed her.

CA were great boats for that time, that seas, and that use.

Today one has more choices.

I think they are very bad choice for 99% of cruisers, but then again the same can be said of the remaining 99% of boats.

Get the toll for the job.

There are very few series built. Westsail/Kendall, Meta, maybe a handful of others.

Seems odd? Maybe because some of us old timers prefer a solid boat under them particularly in a seaway. Modern production boats are built for speed/accommodations and the bottom line. Just walk through any boat yard and you’ll see some Bene’s bending, Catalina’s oil canning on their supports and Hunters well……. read the owners forums.

It’s not all about speed. If that were the case I would have bought a Cat. If you buy a boat for offshore cruising your priorities should be:

1. Build quality/displacement, not a jiffy pop production boat shot from a gun relying on an interior liner for strength.
2. Stowage/Accommodations to handle the long haul.
3. Performance. She doesn’t have to fly Batman, she just has to get you there at a reasonable rate. Remember, it’s in the going not in getting there at break speed.

Fact is Colin Archer designs do get you there. Some like mine have been tweaked and do perform, maybe not like your fin keel, spade rudder modern designs but I can guarantee you that my 28K pound 37’ double ender in winds 12 knts or greater will keep up with anything her size and will outlast many that would have to quit when the going gets rough.

That’s what I look for in an offshore boat. If the OP is looking for a CA40 he is probably looking for the same thing, otherwise he could go to any dealer.

Hi Oscar,

can understand your desire, did lots of trips from Luebeck on Baltic on a CA similar 36"- workboat of 1927.
It is a strong built from oak and is watered since restoring in eighties, not on the hard in winter. The early years in Baltic now in Brittany.
But as a liveaboard in Northern Baltic it could be very hard in winter.
You'll need a reliable heating.

I 'm in doubt that modern boats will resist of frost pressure. Old wooden boats like Haikutter are stronger. Dagmar Aaen | Arved Fuchs Expeditionen

Grinde and other of the same designer are in fact way away from a CA. They are very light and do not have long keels nor keel hung rudders. So it is either CA or Grinde talk, but never both. (Except perhaps for some remote likeness of their aesthetics).

took a post from another thread and agree:
My one experience with a full length keel boat I owned wasn't that good.
The boat took half a gale to get moving. Plus, the long keel gave the boat a VERY wide turning radius, making it hard to manuver in the crowded harbor. But, if it's a blue water boat you're looking for, the long keel can't be beat. Once the wind was up and my course set, that thing sailed beautifully. Tracked well and easy to steer.

Beside the beauty and aesthetic of a wooden longkeeler, it is hard to handle in particular with hung rudder. The props are too far away from rudder. And our old Volvo wasn `t strong enough, 36hp by 12to displ. We had some dramatic experiences by strong winds in small and crowded harbours as well in Seaport Marina Ijmuiden/NL , where a finn keeled yacht can maneuver without any problem.
