I had a FB sail number 20 in Whitby ages ago. Now in New Zealand but boat sold in Exmouth when I got a job as skipper on a Brixham Sailing Trawler. I don't know if you are aware but there is a brilliant Folkboat owners club in UK, I got lots of info re stuff from them, I'm sure they would help re your mast in one way or another.

Yup... you can build a wooden mast and yes it can be deck stepped..
If theres a hole in the coachroof you'll need to allow the height from bilge to deck on top of the length above deck.. coz it woz keel stepped...
