Re: It's our first sailboat

Congratulations!

Take some classes. Find some friends who already sail and have them sail with you. Sail on other people's boats. Spend time on the water, however you can swing it.

And don't worry so much. This is supposed to be fun!

Sail. Lots. And have fun, though that's a given because you have a boat now, right

Congrats!

What they said!

As long as your boat is safe, take it out and put the sails up. Don't touch any projects until you have used it awhile.

Have a beer on deck on the weekends. Lots of sailors will come by and give you advice;-) invite one to come out for a sail and they will gladly share their wisdom. Everyone loves to play on other people's boats. You will learn a ton that way, and on your own boat.

Re: It's our first sailboat

Clean up the boat by going completely thru the boat cleaning out every locker, engine space etc. Get to know where your seacocks are from this exercise.
Then make sure reefing is rigged and practice how to reef the mainsail at the dock. Then go have fun!

If you do that, remember that you are the skipper, not them.

Many people I know, including myself, have gotten into serious trouble listening to someone they thought was way more experienced than them, and either had no ability to conceive about what might happen next in their actions, or simply weren't as good a sailor and you and they thought they were.

One of them even sunk the boat bay grounding onto a ledge.

Don't let them make you do something that you are uncomfortable with. And it will be hard. If you really need training in coming in under power, don't let them make you come in under sail, for example.

Jeepgodd, before I got into yachting I had a beauty Jeep TJ, no lift but great tires a winch and lots of hard use. Jeeping is a lot like yachting, go out, have fun, tackle challenges, get stuck, get towed out and fork out another grand. If youre an off roader, sailing should be intuitive.
