Help!! Transmission problem

We have a Whitby 42 Ketch (1982) that needs transmission work. We are being told the boat was built around the engine so will have to remove the helm to have engine hoisted out. Does anyone know if this is true?
Any help or insight is appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.

It looks like the transmission has zero access, so yes, yank them as a unit.

They are directly under the helm, so yank that too.

Can't you just move the motor forward? You don't say which tranny you have. Drain the motor , unbolt the tranny .roll the engine up and hopefully it isn't a Borg Warner.

Yes, it's a Borg Warner.....by the sounds of it, that's not a good thing, right?!!

Just the opposite. While BW's weigh a ton, they are generally bullet proof. Their down sides are they are more complex, bigger and heavier than a typical mechanical gearbox. They do cost more to rebuild as a result.

And that last bearing on the output side costs a king's ransom! (Don't ask me how I know this.)

Geez, the plan view posted by wingless looks a bit scary.

But maybe you can unbolt the trans from the engine and just hoist it out through wherever you reach the engine for maintenance? As noted, they are pretty robust, mine weighs 70kg, but that's not impossible to handle with a bit of care and two people

I removed the trans and motor from my Cheoy Lee a couple years ago. I have a Perkins 4108 with the Borg Warner trans. I raised the motor off the mounts on a 2 x 12. It only required separating the trans about 3" from the motor to remove it. If you have that much room in the engine compartment you might be able to get it out without completely removing the engine.
I was able to lift the trans out on my own, but I'm a fairly stout guy, better to lift it with two people. You buy the beer.
Mine was put together in 1987 and so didn't want to come apart. But pb blaster and a few days of soaking and persuading got it to separate with no damage.
