Don't know, never heard of a Moody needing such work despite being a member of the association for a decade.

The posts you linked to suggest he knew and broke through a underwater wreck at the mooring but still put his boat on the mooring. The wreckage seems to have unsurprisingly damaged the hull and it sank.

I am moored nearby, that whole area has been used heavily for hundreds years. Some of the slipways are actually D Day ramps for loading ships so not surprised there are obstructions underwater.

Not given up! I love the layout and the shallow draft. Found one in Wales, maybe not too much tortured over the years. The Moody 33 might not be as foul weather proof as the 2t heavier Discus.

Okay leaving aside that unfortunate incident involving a Griffin, you say you are interested in the Discus or Moody 33.

Both super boats, not many Moody 33's with bilge keels though so quite rare. Moody 333 has stern cabin and walk through from main saloon area which the earlier models don't have.

Re: Discus vs Moody 33 bilge keel?

The Moody 33 at least has a shallow draft even with a fin - which allows us to the shallows but probably just as limited in pointing as the bilge Discus. I hate the small cockpit of the Moody 33 just as much I am in love with its huge interior.

AFAIK there are a lot more bilge keeled Westerly-s than Moody-s, no surprise that we don't hear about sinking bilge-keel Moody-s. But it might very well be a design advantage too...

Ask yourself, why were boats built with bilge keels? To take the ground!!!

I suspect that has to do with the initial purchase price, the smaller Westerly's were more affordable so sold in big numbers.

I think the M33 will point very well. There is one sailed up in Scotland by a Prof at I think the Cylde Uni and who regularly wins all the silver in the local races. He wrote a rather good paper on locking or free wheel propellers to bust a few myths. His secret on the race circuit, kept the boat light and upright, something I try to follow.
