Re: cockpit grating

The gratings are custom fitted to the boat. Thus you have a lot hands on shaping of the wood.
But gratings do help keep your feet dry, by allowing the water that board the boat to run off faster and you don't need waders to get around in the cockpit.
IF you find a grating that is too large for your boat, you can always trim it down to size and have it looking good.
But unfortunately there are no wood stretching machines that can make boards longer. So if you find one that is too small. Let someone else purcase it.

Re: cockpit grating

Welcome to CF!

I've been making my gratings out of Starboard for cockpits for years.... WAY too much maintenance involved in wood that sees that much foot traffic!

How do you do that? Isn't Starboard only 3/4" thick? I've been thinking of making a grate for my cockpit.

Thanks.

Re: cockpit grating

Starboard comes from 1/4" to over 6" thick! Typically I use 1/2" to make gratings. Instead of using the wood construction technique of interlocking teeth, I make it out of one piece with slots, squares, or holes as the customer wants with strips of more 1/2" underneath to provide drainage.

Starboard is slippery on Gelcoat though, and pains need to be taken to fit it well to the confines of the cockpit (or shower... works great in there too) so it doesn't slide around. I have an old one I made 10 years ago in a boat out back I'm wrecking out... I'll try to remember to take a pic of it and post it up here.

Re: cockpit grating

We have a teak grate that was on the boat when we got it. We are constantly dropping stuff into the grate (screws, grapes, guitar pick, etc.). Its a project to remove the grate, so when I do it about once a month there is a small treasure trove of stuff. Also gets very dirty. Over the years I have done a lot of repairs to keep it going.

Re: cockpit grating

If you wanted, you could notch starboard as you do wood.... but that notching is done because of the strength of the wood, not the design!

Not very aesthetic, but "Dri Deck" tiles Are a quick N dirty solution.
