cedar instead of teak for interior ?

Has anyone ever seen or heard of using cedar on a boat? Or why you can't?

The hanging lockers on my CS36 Merlin are cedar lined. No cedar anywhere else though.

I owned a gaff rigged "Cornish Crabber" that had cedar boards in the interior. I just fabricated a cockpit sole "wash boards" for a customer made from western red cedar. Cedar is very rot resistant, however not a very hard wood, nicks and dings easily. As there are different sub species of cedar you need to research to find which one is more applicable.

Cedar is light and strong. It is used often in cold molded boats for cross-diagnal laminations. It is however soft. If you bang it too hard it will ding. I'm sure that this can be fixed by coating with epoxy before you varnish. It is not as attractive as Teak in my opinion. What about Mahogahny?

absolutly not as attractive as teak or mahoghany, but not as rare, costly or endangered. I coat with two part marine finish.

Why cedar? Some cedar is very soft. Screws can work loose easily. Dents and gouges would be common.
Wouldn't a harder wood more resistant to everyday use and abuse serve you better for interior surfaces?
In our home I use cedar for closet linings and when making drawer sides. When left unfinished it provides a nice aroma and perhaps some moth and insect resistance. Finished it would loose this benefit and I wonder what other virtue it would have when used for a boat interior?
If cost is an issue, cherry, maple or butternut are less than half the cost of mahogany and would be excellent choices and provide a beautiful interior.

Why cedar? Mainly because I compared the no-rot factor but also because cedar smells nice and its very plentiful and cheap. I'm not planning on using it, I was mostly just wondering. I may use it to line the closets.
