Catalina 36

First I haven't seen one, closest is a days drive away so I'm stuck with internet photos to do the initial looking. On the Mark II, is the rear stateroom usable for a couple?
To be indelicate, is there enough room for amorous activities? I'm no teenager anymore, used to be the back seat of a VW was enough room, but not anymore
It looks to be real tight from the photos
Any specific weaknesses with this type? As a mechanic I love what looks like excellent engine access, can the gearbox be accessed as easily?

Re: Catalina 36

If you are looking for room for amorous activities, look at the Catalina 310 or 350. The forward birth in both of these boats is far more suited for those activities than the rear birth on the C36. Not that it can't be done, but the total height of those rear births under the cockpit can limit certain activities.

Typically, the transmission area can be accessed OK to allow you to check coupling alignment, the stuffing box area, etc. Sometimes you have to work blind to check the transmission fluid, which can suck. If you need to do any serious work, like change the transmission or dampener plate (just finished this project), you are better off removing the bulkhead to get better access. Usually this just takes removing a couple of screws because the bulkhead that is in the way is usually not structurally tabbed in. Just for separation of areas.

On big advantage of Catalinas is they generally have a really active owners group. Here is the one for the C36.

Good luck and fair winds,

Jesse

Re: Catalina 36

I've looked at a C36, the aft cabin is NOT usable for a couple engaged in "other" activities. There is only about 2 feet of head room under the cockpit. For the extra space Is great and I love the setee back there, but it is fairly low.
