Re: Black Hulls?

The late Nat Herreshoff said "There are only two colors to paint a boat, black or white, and only a fool would paint a boat black". I'll leave it at that.

But... In 1970 L. Francis Herreshoff said "if you like a black hull, paint it black - it'll be beautiful against Brightwork".
So I did: [emoji6]

I really want a boat with a black or dark (navy) blue hull. I think it looks amazing but I hear in the tropics it makes the heat unbearable, is that really the case? I want to go everywhere in the world so the extra heat will be welcome in the northern latitudes. Most likely I will be on a tiny boat like an Albin Vega or Alberg 30 and since I'm a cheap bastard I'd likely not put air conditioning on it. Am I going to bake?

This may seem trivial but I really don't like white
Warmer in the tropics is common feedback. You'll never notice the thermal benefit in higher latitudes.

If the like the look of a dark blue hull then buy it for the aesthetics. The thermal issue is not really a first order issue.

A new dark blue paintjob can be very expensive.

If I recall correctly, he was a boat builder, not an artist.

I think most people would say Captain Nat was both.

Understood. I simply share it now when I welcome people aboard CF or anytime anyone wants to know.

Some boats are "hot" looking just sitting there. Like that sporty look Flicka 20 in Ferrari or Lipstick Red.

Here are a few Flickas in a variety of colors.

And as I could already have told people, red looks the best anyway.

Thank you for the compliment!

Re: Black Hulls?

Repainted my hull royal blue a couple of years ago. Did awlgrip with clearcoat topcoat. Have only waxed it once in two years and it still looks new, the clearcoat is awesome. The blue is hotter than white for sure but unlike you I am not a cheapskate and have installed a lot of A/C so I do not care about extra heat.
Boat looks so much better than when it was white. It seems most people who bad mouth the idea of dark colored hulls probably do so because they are too cheap to pay the $20k or $30k to repaint their boat anyway. As far as the quote from Herreshoff, do I really care what some yacht designer who died in 1938 thinks. He probably thought indoor plumbing was a bad idea.

He went with a cedar bucket.

Re: Black Hulls?

I love the look of a dark hull, but for the tropics not so good. I left about 3 layers of skin from my palm and fingers on the hull of a beautiful dark blue boat in Fiji. They do get extremely hot and anyone who says otherwise is hiding the truth.

I like the blue one.

Can you imagine me in that? I'd have my head pressed against the chain locker and my feet sticking out of the companionway hahaha Nice to look at though.
