What is the best autohelm for a 1996 Hunter 40.5
Doesn't seen to be enough space

FYI, Autohelm is a band name. You might get more comments if your post title was more specific and you used Autopilot. Also, are you looking for a below decks AP or a wheel AP.

there are a lot of options....like above do you want a below deck or wheel pilot?

Is your quadrant below decks, or under a cover in the cockpit?

there is always the rotary drive below the pedestal option too.

Quadrant is beneath removable panel on deck. Id like to install a Raymarine Autohelm (auto-pilot).

I have a 1997 Hunter 40.5 it's too big for wheel- mounted unit.

I think your options on that are for either a rotary drive below the pedestal (takes some inventive work to hide it in the aft cabin and keep the water out) or possibly a hydraulic cylinder beneath the deck plate.

Another option could be one of the push/pull cable drives.

The above options are a little spendy. Another route would be the CPT wheel pilot.

Looks like we're going with mechanical chain drive unit inside pedestal enclosure. Going to have to relocate electronics that currently occupy the space...

Some wheel pilots will have a displacement limit and I would venture a guess that the Hunter 40.5 would be more than they can handle. Below deck Raymarine unit would most likely be a linear drive on your boat.
