Annapolis Boat Show

I am looking for 40-45 ft. sail boat to replace my benny 281.
what was the best of the show in that area?
I have long time ago given up racing so fast boats are what I watch not what I sail.

The one I liked best in that range was the Moody 45 DS. It has the pilot house designed on rather that added on.

Hi Steve:

For me it is a toss up between the Outbound 46, sorry, a foot larger<grin> and as mentioned above, the Moody. Both excellent boats....I am afraid I would have to toss a coin.....my wife preferred the Moody, I am drawn to the Outbound.

Cruising boat: I would have to agree that the Outbound 46 really has thought it out nicely.
Even thought they did not bring it to the show.....the Shannon 43!
One of my favorites!
Same goes for the Cabo Rico 42.....god she's a beauty! Yar.

Performance cruiser:
I am partial to the Tartan 4300, looks like it has the amenities that make the Admiral happy.
I didn't go on the Oyster.....thought I might as well stick in my price range!


Cruising Cat: mmmmm.Didn't go on too many, but thought the Antares looked well built.

Look at my Taswell 58AS listed by David Walter's Yachts. It may be bigger than you want but it is set up to be sailed by one person and you can get it for less than 800k completely equipped for world cruising.

The Tartan's were beautiful. Great bang for buck, 4300 was great. they had a 37 foot Sabre that sure felt like a 40 plus footer that was beatiful and seemed really solid.

Didn't see any Hinckly's which would be my choice if I had the $$$ most likely, I hear they are only building to order these days.

We really liked the following four at the boat show:
Tartan 4300
Moody 45 Aft Cockpit (classic - not the DS, although the DS mentioned earlier is a beautiful boat)
Dufour 45
Bavaria 45

For the money I think the bavaria 45 is the best bet.

If money is out of the picture, I say go for the Moody ... either one would be a fantastic boat.

Best boat I boarded at the boat show was a Gozzard 41. Very well built, innovative design, great lines and sails like the wind.

I wasn't at the Annapolis Show this year -- actually busy buying a boat -- so I don't know if they had a Sabre 426 in MD. But last year at Newport the 426 was there and i found it to be an extremely well built and well thought-out boat. More $$$ for new one but comparable to the Tartan and there are used late model 426's popping up on Yachtworld.
This led us to a purchase of the Sabre 425.

How do you know ... did you get to sail it? Also, what were the innovations you liked?

My choice would have been the civilian version of the Leadership 44 by Morris.

I felt as if there were two types of boats at the show in that size range....the Beneteau/Dufour type boats, and then the Tartan/Cabo Rico/Outbound/Moody boats. The former are fast boats that looked as if they were designed by Ikea, which isn't necessarily bad if that's the look that you prefer. The latter type had beautiful woodwork, very solid boats and were at least twice the price of the former class. Just depends on your tastes and wallet.

All sailboats do "sail like the wind", and new Gozzards sail very well - in both light winds and heavy.
In light winds, a Gozzard has a high SA thanks to it's 6' bowsprit extending the sail area. In heavy winds, the cutter rig is versatile keeping the boat near hull speed.

One more vote for the Outbound 46. Best way to spend a half million that I could find. The only brochure I brought home. I liked the much cheaper Jeauneau 439 for the amazing forward cabin, but they only make it in a tri-cabin and that's a waste of space for me.

Could'nt agree more. For weekend sailors like me the faster Ones...
