I have 2 poles one is telescoop and extends the other is a 8ft

can anyone tell me what they ar used for exactly?

I assume the extensible is for the genoa?

in single handing , they are overboard facilitators. in sailing they pole out your jibs or spinnaker for downwind sailing

what do you mean overboard facilitators??

i always considered the use of poles in my sailing as just another way to make me swim.( i am clumsy sometimes)
however, many have used poles in setting spinnakers or jibs in downwind sailing quite nicely.

oh I see!
you know if it was up to me these poles would go and so the genoa and spinakker. I plan to sail singlehand to asia and have no need for extra risk, sailing at 1.5 knot is plesent and alows other activities then tiller management. this is not a race against time but a way of living for me.

but experienced sailors all advised me to keep them, and they are probably right. it will be next spring that I will have a chance to try them and see how they fit my needs.

keep them. I think zeehag saw my latest adventure rigging a pole. They can get the better of you and facilitate swimming. But rigged properly they are safe to use and add benefit. Mine is 20' thats a lot of lever an 8' pole should be very managable

The extensible one is a whisker pole. You can find an explanation and instructions here. The 8 foot pole is a bit of a mystery to me. It's too short to serve as a spinnaker pole on your boat and too long to be a reaching strut.

I agree that setting up a pole when sailing solo in a breeze could be dangerous, but you may have a guest on board from time to time. A whisker pole can be very useful when sailing downwind in light air.

On a 28' boat sailing at 1.5kt you would start to have storage problems for all the necessary food and other supplies on any really long passage. Canned food gets really old at the end of long passages. You need to know how to keep the boat moving in light air which will likely account for 1/3 or more of your time on passage.

Concerning tiller management, regardless of speed you will need a windvane to steer the boat or to learn sheet to tiller methods for self-steering. Hand steering on passage is something you do if you have crew.

An extra long pole can be used to pole out a furling genoa. But it has to be very long to work well. I bet like 1.3 times the base a minimum.

When no such long pole is available, one is better off with the inner jib (if there is an inner stay) poled out (provided it is some sort of a jib, not a storm jib or anything) with the standard spinnaker pole.

The J dimension on a Hinterhoeller 28 would be 11.2' It's difficult to conceive how a spinnaker pole any shorter than that would be of any use, especially considering the fact that the boat was designed with a masthead rig.

Are you certain that the 8' pole is not extendable?
