'78 Cheoy Lee Offshore 41

Getting ready to look at a '78 cheoy lee offshore 41.

It needs TLC....
the teak has been removed from the deck and reglassed.
There are no electronics. It has the original deisel engine. No hour meter.
I believe it has original sails and masts...I can repair the masts if I need to...I can rewire it if I need to (electrician of 30 something years)

What do I need to be aware of on this boat?

I know of one person who has an '81 on this forum...I hope he answers.

Anyway, if you know of some things I need to be aware of, speak up. ALL help is greatly appreciated!

78 would be a glass boat alum stick, I would wager.
Having my hands on some wet and crumbly wood inside a Cheoy Lee tonight I would say that the teak was removed for a reason, so check for damage in the cabin and the deck core. Also, don't know about your boat, but my bilge had concrete with metal shot that was rusting and cracking the concrete bedding. Then all the other usual stuff...

The tanks. Water and specially the fuel tanks. If the fuel tank isn't leaking it will be. Engine is probably a 4-108. Have it surveyed. It will usually run forever.

If it had wood masts look close and hard for rot, specially of they are painted. Go up them and press with your fingers focusing on areas below tangs and spreaders. Also around the track. Same with the bowsprit.

Good that it has no electronics. You'll be able to do it the way you want.

And lastly, look for chain plate leaking. In a couple of areas, like in the head behind the cabinets (if my memory is correct) you should be able to see the glassed in chain plate. I don't think it will be covered. Look for any leakage around the bolts, etc.

When it comes out of the water for survey (you are having a survey.... Right?) check the rudder for delamination and look at the gugeons for any cracks. Probably fine but worth looking at. The surveyor will help there.

If the boat was decently maintained, everything I listed should be just fine (except for the fuel tank). If not, it could be a bit of work. Nothing that can't be fixed though, specially if the price was right

I plan on spending a couple hours looking at things the 1st time I look at it, taking some notes and pix. I will peruse those notes and pix for a few weeks while looking at other boats. If I like this one the best I will make another trip and spend several more hours looking more closely at things and taking more notes.

Then I will be doing estimates on replacing/repairing the items in my notes. Then I will have to find the fair market value. I will make an offer that is conditional on a survey (Yes, I will be getting one).

I just don't want to waste money on a survey if I could've seen the problems myself.

Thanx for the tip on where to look for rot on the masts....it's things like that, that I am asking for!

I spent 2 hours on it today.

It sorta scared me.

The present owners has not cared for this boat since he bought it 8 years ago. Both masts have peeled varnish, and the wood does not look good in a few places. None of the wood on the exterior has varnish sticking to it and the wood is looking roough in most places.

The port llights have been leaking, the chainplates have been leaking. and there was a creaking sound on 3 places on the deck.

The water heater must be replaced, as well as the pressure pump. The condenser for the fridge is shot.

The interior wood is not in good shape...the floor needs repair, the table? complete rebuild....

All the cushions and fabric need replacing.

The mainsail (only sail I looked at) has a rip at the only spot I looked....

Chainplates are rusted.

Running rigging is WAY past it's prime and is coming apart. HOWEVER the standing rigging appears to be in good shape where it attaches to the chainplates.

It looks to me as if EVERYTHING needs repairs or replacing. and this includes almost every inch of teak (veneer) inside, and probably 1/4 of the teak and holly sole.

Even the paint that was inside was either cracked and peeling or had mildew...

And this guy wants 32,000 bucks....(because it's in bad shape).....

Yes, I got some pix, but they are mainly close up shots of various items. Probably 20 pix total.
None of the masts, all interior of the damaged wood and rusted chainplates.

are you busy March 15 or 16?

My last boat was a catalina 22.....This is a BIG step for me, and I might be able to get this boat on the cheap....Like maybe 10K. if I play my cards right....

I love the layout, and can do all of the work myself (I'm in construction i.e. electrician, with carpentry skills).

After speaking with HansSolo, and giving it a lot of thought.

I think that there is just way to much work to be done to this boat, even if I could talk the owner down way low.
