Hey Kyra! My girlfriend Miya and I are leaving from Vancouver on September 12th, headed offshore to San Francisco and then beyond. Looking forward to meeting you enroute, I've just started reading your blog now. I would be shocked if we don't already share a few friends...

in san diego , first go to cop docks--other wise known as municipal docks, run by harbor police. there you find out about anchoring in cruisers (a-9) anchorage. need a permit and an inspection for seaworthiness/safety by the harbor police. mooring is under san diego mooring company and requires a uscg aux safety inspection. vanessa at the mooring company is th eone with whom to9 speak about finding a temporary mooring. good luck.
also in san diego is downwind marine--they have a cruisers guide to the trip south into mexico. they are helpful to cruisers.
if you go to ensenada, there are options to the very high prices at coral and cruiseport. juanitos botes is a good yet rickety dock with security and no amenities. is a centrally located place near the port captain. tell them i sent you. they are friends. is the blue and whiote dock to the left when entering that harbor. not all the way to left, as those are the commercial fishers and some are not good folks--have sticky fingers. juanitos is a safe place. good luck and smooth sailing. ther eis no anchoring allowed in ensenada harbor except at certain times--i am not certain if baja haha is one of those times.

Ourselves (sv Deep Playa) and sv Bella Star are hanging in Port Angeles waiting for fog to lift and favorable weather to go to Neah Bay where we will wait somewhere and make the jump down to San Francisco.

Yay, more like-minded folks! We just sold our BM tickets - first time in seven years that we won't be heading to the desert, but if we want to make our September 12th leave date we have to buckle down and finish some projects...

We got in late last night and now happy campers at the Port of Newport Marina. Guest moorage is $27 a night with power.

Resting up working on projects and watching the weather.

How was the trip to Newport? We are picking up crew in PT on the 6th. Hope to leave on the morning(7th) ebb for Neah bay. does anyone know if AT&T phones work in Neah bay? Two years ago Verizon was the only game in town.

We went ~15NM offshore from Cape Flattery and then straight down the coast (i.e. getting further away as we went. We had to dodge some fishing vessels but they seemed to be mostly inside us. Our buddy boat sv Bella Star stayed closer to shore and beat us here by 12+ hours (we took 55 Hours).

For us, swell was on the beam and wind was on the aft quarter and it was pretty light. We were sailing at 3-4 knots on the night portion of the passages and sails were a flogging in the swell. We motored the last 14 hours because there was only 3 kts of wind and we wanted to make it to Yaquina Bay on the the 2300 High Tide. Bar crossing was not a big deal in a dead calm with light swell. We then grabbed the fuel dock and passed out.

A great first ocean passage for us!

Loving reading of people who've started the journey - we're headed to Port Angeles from Victoria tomorrow to check in and then it's off to San Fran (Neah Bay if we have to wait for a weather window).
Super excited!
