Just got home a couple of days ago from making that trip from Lake Union to San Diego.Kinda hopped our way a bit, Port Townsend, Port Angles then Neah Bay. Flat water with a on-the nose wind of around 7 to 15kts. all the way to Neah Bay. Got pulled over twice, once by the coasties then by DHS. From Cape Flattery, wind on the nose all the way to Coos Bay. Light winds, downpours 3 to 5' seas. Same weather down to Monterey, light winds and fairly flat seas. Monterey to Morro Bay was a different story, 25 to 35kts 8 to 10'ers pushing us towards foggy Morro Bay. Sat there a couple of days waiting for Pt.Conception to mellow out and it did. Light winds, huge big fat rollers from the nw with what seemed, 30 second periods! Nice! Saw a pack of Killer Whales living up to their name as the attacked a Humpback and calf.2 finned within a foot of the cockpit! Yikes! Will post pics once I find my camera. From there nice sail to Santa Barbara Island slide down the lee of Catalina so my crew could check out my old home waters and a smooth sail to S.D. Btw AIS is worth it's weight in gold! Especially 40 miles out from San Francisco and from Lake Union to Neah Bay. Took all the stress out of running into the big boys at night in the fog. I got real lucky with the weather and the train ride home cinched it as the train number was 777! Time to go by a lotto ticket!

Ais gives the vessels name, type, lenght, call sign, bearing to it, course it is heading, speed, closest point of approach and time to collision! Actually time to cpa. Therefore, you can call the vessel and make sure they are aware of you, ask them to change course a couple of degrees for wider seperation, or modify your own course. Due to the fact there were some really big big boys out there,like 1,275 feet traveling at 22kts., I like to stay at least 2 miles away. You can darn near surf their wakes! We did not have an ais transmitter just a reciever that overlayed on the chart plotter and radar. Garmin 4210. It was easy enough that my newbie crew could read it well. I would pop for the extra bucks and get a ais transciever, you are really just a grain of sand compared to those guys. Also the fishing fleet was out running down Washington and Oregon and that made it nice to see what they were up to. 0.8 kts. to 1.8 troll speed for most of them.

Yes AIS is wonderful. At this stage given there low cost it should be right after the VHF radio in the fit out list.

One of the best features of AIS is obtaining the name of the transmitting vessel. When you call on VFH the vessel will answer if you use the vessel name as shown on AIS.

How does a VFH radio work? Most commercial boats are on ch 13 in the San Juan's

Any ship 20m or over in length should be monitoring VHF ch 13
