Why do sailors deploy fenders while underway?

Because they're about to come into a dock...and after they've left the dock they forget to pull them in. I always have a laugh when I see it because some salty types think it's real uncool, but after having laughed I have occasionally realised I'm doing the same thing. I'm sorry if it really annoys some of you but I secure enough not to worry about it.

Re: Why do sailors?

I Single handed a lot of the time- I put them down sometimes a little early as when I get near the dock I have my hands full-dropping the anchor, backing in and handleing the stern lines- sometimes as others have said I have forgot to put them up for a little while underway - I also have not taken them off the cleat and they have rolled over the side on occasion- no big deal- If this sort of thing Irritates some folks perhaps they need to relax a little more and not worry about what others are doing and pay more attention on why this bothers them-If folks spent 1/10 of the time looking inward as they do outward , they would find silly little things like this could never bother them

Re: Why do sailors?

I singlehand 99% of the time....and I simply either forget about pulling them in, or just don't care. Not like it makes any difference to my sea slug. Besides, I'm out there for my enjoyment....not trying to "look good" or gain the approval of other sailors. I couldn't care less if someone is bothered by my fenders being out.

Re: Why do sailors?

Some boats are just way to fast so the skipper needs to create some drag to slow down. LOL Now about that bridge I have for sale!!

Re: Why do sailors?

Hey, that's my boat. It was a great day sailing. I remember the day vividly. What's wrong with my fenders?

Has anyone on here ever posted a photo and had the owner of the vessel in question see it online and comment?

Who needs fenders for that. I keep the barnacles on the bottom to combat my top speed.
