Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

Again, there is absolutely **nothing** wrong with just reading and learning, refraining from posting or just doing so rarely!

Certainly not deserving of a pejorative like "freeloader"!

So true. It’s getting worse… An increasing number of people seem to think the Internet is just FB, instagram and twit.

Funny story; I taught a course back in the early 90s about how to use various tools on the Internet. Gopher was the cool thing back then, with the relatively new search tool, Veronica. There was Telnet/FTP, and Archie to search. Jughead was there too as I recall.

The final 1/2 day of this six-week course was on this new fangled thing called the World Wide Web. The protocol was just starting to be adopted, and the first browser was out: Lynx.

The class notes I wrote were something like: “This http stuff is pretty useless right now, but keep an eye on it. I expect it to get big.”

… If only I’d invested in Netscape (and then got out before Explorer killed it).

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

We'd all be rich with a crystal ball. I enjoy lurking and replying, but I'm definitely an arm chair sailor for the moment. We have some lakes within a few miles and the coast is 2 hours away. Soon I'll get a day sailor I can trailer. Until then...

WRT my location, I'm a member of a SAYRA club and was raised there. One of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me was when I mentioned we were headed back home to Raleigh, replied to me, "you live in Raleigh, but this is your home."

I consider this forum one of my homes, too. Happy Holidays!

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

Oh I totally take a title a Freeloader here...Isn't that part of the purpose? To freely share information? If not there would be no guests allowed.

I don't post often as I am not one that has a huge amount of knowledge to add to a conversation but when I can I do. It may or may not be received well. That is not my concern, but rather that I may have had something that someone can see differently than before.

This site has kept my dream alive for a very, very long time. I come and go as I feel the dream is impossible at times, but it is always marked as one of my favorites and then I come back and think, I will get there eventually

I learn from those that share, I learn that sometimes newbies don't know how to navigate things and we need patience to help them along. I learn from others instructing them. I learn from the mishaps and confessions LOL of others. But mostly I am a freeloader. I listen.

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

I joined the crew here after purchasing my boat a few years back. It's a 30 footer. Before joining here I was a regular "guest" seeking answers to questions that many before me have asked and even more have answered. At the time I had very little to offer.

I dream of living aboard and travelling the world, but sadly, that's where it ends for me. I will always be a coastal sailor and I can be happy with that because it means I get to keep my wife and house and life that I love as is.

I am constantly learning from this crew. I read hundreds of times more than I post. Mainly this is because I don't like asking something that has been asked a thousand times before.

Anyway, just thought I'd take the moment to thank the contributors who add so much to my knowledge. I suspect there are many who feel intimidated by those who have learned so much more than themselves, but that is not the crews fault.

To those that scoff, you say more about yourselves than your own brains are able to contemplate, everyone recognises it but you.
Be happy, it's almost Christmas.

I think people with specific interests that want to share and gain knowledge, will always subscribe to Forums.

For cruisers with limited email, sourcing a contact or solution via a question or search on CF, is a pretty quick way to research something obscure.
Often I will just copy the best answer and file for offline use.
Don't use FB Twit or anyother social media....

Guess that makes me a bot then.

I've never tweeted but apparently I have two followers.

The only reason that I have a Twitter account is that an Internet Service that I resell uses twitter to post critical network, maintenance and status updates.

Re: Why are lurkers not joining..

This has been a good thread (Thanks Boatie!) [emoji106]

Its given me a much better insight into those that mostly monitor our discussions but don't get involved for various personal reasons.

That makes your opinion of CF far more objective than those of us who participate.

So I'm curious ...what would you change?

I look at things here a lot without signing in and expect a lot of other people do as well.
This would make the numbers look the way they do.
