The REAL Cost of an Older Boat . . .

In that case, you probably should not get a boat.

Probably not but I still have one and hope the money or skills show up. I think you can buy an older boat in decent condition and have alot of fun with it. Many people buy one, load it up to cruise the 7 seas and never leave the lake. So if you stay within reality you can do alot

Buying old and needing refit - That works very well if you like doing that (I do!).
Buying new

The second choice may not always be the most cost effective, but it's usually the most fun.

I'm in the middle of restoring my second older boat. I figure it is a 5 year project. And I'll spend about twice what I paid for it. But then again I got it for about 40% of the going price.

bought my neglected poorly refit formosa and within 3 yrs i was sailing her. for one of those years i sailed opb in gulf of mexico. there are NO rules to acquisition and cruising.

I do it because it takes me where I want to go at a price and can afford now.

If I could afford a new 500K catamaran instead of my 25K used monohull, I'd do it in a second, but I'd rather be out cruising the Bahamas now in a boat I can afford than sitting through an Iowa winter dreaming about sailing the Bahamas in a boat I can't afford.

I bought my first cruiser for 11K and 5K in maintenance over 7 years represented even a better cruising value.
