Stolen dingy st Augustine

We just had our dingy stolen from the city docks in st Augustine between 6:30pm and 9:30pm Sunday evening and ask any one in the area to keep a lookout if they could. It's an 9' AB aluminum inflateable with 2 darker grey wear patches located on the port side. Fl registration # FL 4407 PW It had with it a nissan 9.8. In the old days in St. A we used to have several dinghies stolen at a time about once a year. Usually they were found further south sans engines.
I would make a comment about certain foreign flagged vessels having coincidentally passed through about the same time but I don't want to insult any innocent cruisers.

Sure does.. I dont really expect it to be found but figured i have to atleast try. It looks like they stole the gas tank from a neighboring dink aswell probly to makesure they didnt run out durring there getaway. Thankfully there were other cursers that came to the dock to give my wife a ride back to our boat or she would have been stranded. Thanks zboss

Frank, you have our sympathy. A few years ago our nearly new RiB got pinched off the stern of our moored boat in Hobart, Tasmania. When you live at anchor all the time it is a devastating blow to loose the means of getting ashore. In our case the perps drove it 15 miles up the Derwent, took the 12 year old Suzuki 15 off it and then poured petrol into the hull and fired it. We eventually got back a scorched aluminium hull and some charred rubber bits. Depressing.

At any rate, we wish you the best of luck in recovery.

So this begs the question. How do you secure your dinghy if you go to a dinghy dock? I've long used locking procedures for my bicycle that I think might work if leaving the dink in a questionable location. Take my motor, just leave my oars..... please.

HansSolo, my sympathies on your loss. My brother-in-law had two outboards and a dinghy stolen in St John, USVI in one year. I will be looking at the chain zboss referred to above for mine when I head south.

only concerned about the salt environment with that setup. i been a locksmith for 35 yrs .. this was never thrown into the mix.. might be a plan.

I just go to Home Despot and pick the biggest fattest cheapest chain. If they can't cut it off the roll without going to the giant bolt cutters, that's good enough. Heavy but cheap option. Most thieves don't roll with 6' long bolt cutters.

Is this chain galvanized? I don't see that info on their website. How does it stand up in saltwater?

Mike, why not if you have valid information? The PC crowd has not resorted to public hangings yet but you will be tried in abstentia for telling the truth and having a personal opinion. Is there anything worse?

To each his own but having also been the victim of dinghy theft I learned quickly not to cheap out on security.

Personally, I do not under-estimate the need for a strong lock and chain. There has been the occasional time when, due to unseen circumstances, we needed to leave our dinghy at a less than secure location overnight. Having a strong chain is the only way we feel secure when leaving the dinghy that way.

You can order it "Electro Galvanized".

We applied zinc epoxy to ours and even before then it wasn't bad since we regularly rinse our dinghy with fresh water anyhow.

Even more important is getting the right lock. We keep several types of the dinghy at hand.
