Obviously family / religious sensibilities to take into account, but just because someone gets cremated does not mean they can't then be interred into a plot and also have a funeral at "Home". Being cremated does not make scattering compulsory / the only option for the remains.

Although Cuba a Catholic (Atheist?!) country and IIRC cremation not such a biggie with that religion it is not forbidden - so I would be very surprised if Cuba did not have some Crematorium facilities.

Anyway, just a practical thought.
as an aside , ( and no Im not interested inflames) the 1992 Cuban constitution permits religious freedom, but in practice it is predominantly Catholic.

Catholicism has no issue with cremation by the way, its has permitted its followers ( deluded as they might be!!) to be cremated since the 1960s!!, There are issues surrounding the presence of the cremated remains in the funeral liturgy!.

Discussing religion on the Internet is quite insane IMHO, especially on a sailing forum.

I think it was me who first brought it up (on this thread - not the internet!) - but that purely from a practical perspective (dead folks involve a lot of practicalities!), although also on the Atheist end of gods IME can find pretty much whatever you want from religions, and that even without leaving the "mainstream" - just have to ask around as practices vary from place to place and even Church to Church of the same sect. and they tend to be pragmatic when needed, especially if you turn up with facts on the ground (i.e. body already cremated).

In this case, cremation (for cost, simplicity and speed reasons) likely a pragmatic route that is doable in practice.

Am conscious that this thread not really for a wide ranging discussion, but from the sounds of him I doubt Jay would mind if his demise abroad throws up a few pointers for others who find themselves in same circumstances.

Yeah, the Goat had a lot of good ideas .

Of course the fact that I got the T-shirt on the body abroad thing (and the later religious burial rules at home) did also kinda help - albeit at the time I was kinda surprised to find I already had a good handle on the deal, part of my collection of useless info that rattles around the noggin of DOJ .

I am setting sail to Cuba to retrieve the remains of Jay. It appears the United States government has no desire to do such but you will see an American take proper actions.
