Re: S/V ???

My company (when it was mine ) had a large IP network with hundreds of routers. We gave names to those routers and my rule was 4 letters and ending with an "i". I liked Jedi best so that is our boatname now, but we got a fitting name for every router. So I would propose you make a similar guideline and see what you come up with. I'll give a couple more from our range: Yeti, padi, hari, hadi, wadi, Yuri, kiwi etc. etc.

I like for "For Free", then you can tell others they can come and ride on your boat for free.

I once saw junk rigged single masted boat named "Wonton Sloop". And there is a boat in my marina named, "Despite Alimony". I would rather not have to call either of those over the radio.

Re: S/V ???

Last year I wanted to rename my newly acquired Baltic. I was looking for something unique, something short if possible but also something that sounds good in various languages. When I was working on the design for the logo, I came up with a wave that combines with an S. So I wanted something starting with an S that sounded good in most European languages. Therefore I started looking in Latin.

I dug up the word "Salsus", which means salty, or figuratively it also means witty. Perfect! She will be sailed on salty seas and she is a bit cheeky anyway.

So this might be a route for you too - have a go through some Latin online dictionaries and pick a word that speaks to you.

I like that Sisyphys. It's fitting since you mention the varnish work.

I like the name "Nunya Business", but I wouldn't use it on my OWN boat.

Re: S/V ???

I vote for Chappa'ai. It has a mysterious ring to it, it's not too long, there is some relevant symbolic meaning (a gate to adventure), and it's a device to recognize and meet fellow nerds. Who could ask for more?

Re: S/V ???

You like Hitchhikers Guide and a female name is always fitting so how about Trillian? I like Zaphod too but I'm a little bent.

Edit: BENT but Still STRAIGHT

Re: S/V ???

I love the name discussions. Kudos to JazzyO because Salsus is pretty cool. We have the name but not the boat...it came to us in an inspired moment. However, a few boats which I have seen seem very comfortable in their given names, so it will just depend. I figure our boat will let us know if she want's a new name.

Mostly Harmless? .... Harmless?..... Wasn't the "do no harm" the prime directive so often quoted among the crew of the Enterprise? What about "Prime Directive"

"In Bed with you mother" was a call I heard over the VHF radio this weekend.
Hope they never need help, as I doubt that help would come.

What about H2G2? I would avoid #1 too hard to communicate. I like Trillian too. Liff?

Just tossing out ideas.

Re: S/V ???

And if you like really obscure scifi references, try Rheya, a creation of the intelligent ocean out of Stanislaw Lem's novel Solaris. Come to think of it, Solaris wouldn't be a bad name either...

No no no, silly. The "Do No Harm" comes from the Hippocratic Oath, which physician's take when they graduate medical school. The Prime Directive, which is Chapter 1, Article 2, Paragraph 7 of the Articles of the Federation, clearly states: "Nothing within these Articles Of Federation shall authorize the United Federation of Planets to intervene in matters which are essentially the domestic jurisdiction of any planetary social system, or shall require the members to submit such matters to settlement under these Articles Of Federation." Yes...I'm a geek.
