Re: Nova Scotia cruising advice

A quick comment on Yarmouth. It's pretty much the foggiest part of Nova Scotia's Atlantic coast (as opposed to the Fundy coast). It'll get better, as you work your way towards Halifax, though there's always a chance for fog in Nova Scotia.

Cheers.
Paul.

Re: Nova Scotia cruising advice

We found NS like sailing with wax paper wrapped around our heads. Lots of fog. Make sure you have good radar and AIS. note that the fishing boats do not use AIS transmitters and most have no receivers. Many close encounters. Take advantage of fresh fish markets where you find local boats selling fish.

Photo of my best NS swim buddy. Yes, the water was cold.

Fog is annoying but can be dealt with. Maybe we will cross paths.

Re: Nova Scotia cruising advice

Currently sitting in Marie Joseph Harbour. Quite lovely and peaceful. Nova Scotia has been very pleasant to sail with afternoon winds from the southwest up to 20 knots or so. Not much fog, only in Canso for a few hours.

leaving tomorrow from Cape Cod with 2 crew people
plan to to sail to Shelburne first, take a break and then continue to Halifax, crew will fly back home and I will do as much as I can with a relative short weather window for the rest of this season.
I believe Shelburne will be a point of entry for customs?
must be a phone number I need to check the web and the procedure should be to call and request a check-in
Have the passport as well as the crew members.
I do not see will have time to process any other type of permits?

Re: Nova Scotia cruising advice

A passport, and boat papers will be sufficient to enter the country. I've not heard of any other other permits necessary, though I'm Canadian....

Be sure everyone's passports are up to date.

Cheers, and have a great crossing.

Paul.

Have a question about Halifax aproach

I noticed that there are some major shipping lanes entering Halifax. do you have any advice on the route to enter? I want to avoid getting mixed up in he traffic . do you have a suggestion on which Marina to rock at once we arrive to Halifax.

Re: Nova Scotia cruising advice

Hi David. Congratulations!! Welcome to Canada!

Halifax: Just stick to the main channel, and give way to any commercial traffic.

The traffic will not be very heavy, compared to Boston, NYC, etc. You'll not have much to worry about, regards shipping.

I'd suggest the Armdale Yacht club, which is up the North West Arm. Or, anchor just off the club, and take your dinghy to the dinghy dock just North and West of the anchorage, and walk into Halifax proper. It's about a 25 minute walk, and very nice.

GPS coordinates: 44*38.3945'N 63*36.8345'W is where you'll find the public dinghy dock.

The Binnacle, a marine store, is 10 minutes walk from Armdale Yacht club.

Cheers.
Paul.

Re: Nova Scotia cruising advice

I should have mentioned. The Armdale Yacht Club is nearly all the way up the Northwest Arm. The first yacht club you'll see on your left, is the Royal NS Yacht Squadron. A nice club, with a nice restaurant, but it's expensive, and a heck of a long walk to anywhere.

Cheers.
Paul.
