New Marine Weather and Tide Site

I built a site offering weather and tide information for US Coastal waters and the Great Lakes plus PR and HI. It has tide tables and graphs, 7 day forecasts, marine and area observations, satellite, radar, wind forecast observations and history, and basically a lot of information all on one page. I am offering it free. It has gone through 3 rounds of beta testing -- a few friends, a couple of coast guard types, and a Cal Boats group. I would like to expand the group of people using it and offering suggestions and have picked this group as I have gotten good feedback from you all in the past. It will always be free so don't worry about using it and then finding out it is a pay site. I am a sailor and built the site for the sailing community. It is cool that the coast guard is using when dispatching rescues though. It is very easy to use. Please check it out Weather.L-36.com

Re: New Marine Weather and tide Site

Thank you for the nice comment.

Thanks also to the many of you who tried the site. I can see from my log that the vast majority of you had no problem with the site setup but two of you did.
1) For the person who entered a location on Bahama. You can get a 7 day forecast if you are happy with a location about 1/2 way to Florida.
2) There was one other case and I will do another post on that.

Re: New Marine Weather and tide Site

It is very nicely done.

Do you plan on adding a more mobile friendly view?

Re: User from Saddle Rock village,NY

There was a big red error message presented to one user from Saddle Rock village, NY. It is a problem specific probably to the browser used. I am just guessing that it is a smart phone but would like to know what the real story is. I ask that you please email me or post a reply here. What are the specifics? When I click on the setup map for Saddle Rock, everything works fine. Something is truncating the URL and I don't know what that is. I can probably fix it if I know more details.

The specifics are that the specification on the URL is at least 1000 characters and the location entered produces one 399 long. It was truncated to 171 characters by something. I would like to know what that was.

Thanks, Allen

I would be interested in adding a mobile friendly view but would like to know more about what that means. It looks pretty good on my Nexus-One and, although it clearly could be better, it is certainly usable. I do use it in a horizontal display window which is probably required for what is there. The tide section isn't too nice on the phone I must admit and I could fix that for mobile.

So I toss out the question, what would you want to see changed on the mobile friendly version? The more details people give me, the more the final product will do what you want.

That said, if the 171 character limit is a mobile device limit, I want to know about that so please, if you got a big red error message, let me know.

Allen

PS. My next project is an article on how to do boat polars with just a masthead fly, knot meter, and hand held wind meter so a mobile version may be some time off. That may be more of a racing thing but I have had cruisers specifically express interest.

Re: New Marine Weather and tide Site

I haven't tried it on my Blackberry yet, but I can imagine it wouldn't be nice to look at.

I will give it a go later and see what I see.

Great work man. I like the one big page view where it can be printed out easily.

Re: New Marine Weather and tide Site

Allen,

Nice job. Boat goes in the water in two weeks. Your weather site will come in handy this season.

Thanks,
Mark
