Monohull to Multihull

Not trying to make a Monohull vs. Multihull smackdown... just looking for any experiences with sailors that have made the switch from one to the other and what their thoughts were. We are thinking of getting a catamaran to spend time in the Keys and the Bahamas. We have already done the trip in our boat with a 5ft draft. On our return home this year we met Tony Smith designer of the Gemini, got a tour and detailed information about his boats. The seed was planted..... now we are just curious to how different it will be to live on a cat for 7 months a year as apposed to our Baba............

You'll have much more room to move (space)
You'll visit places you previously couldn't go and anchor closer in (draught)
You'll travel further afield on weekend trips (speed)
You wont spill your drinks (stability)

gemini's are great if your a small person. i barely made it thru the doors.
bumfuzzle was in a cat for a few years and just started in a mono, you might want to read up on them.

How different is the sailing motion in rough weather ? Only been on a 41ft Main Cat in good weather .... we have never been afraid of rough weather in our current boat and wonder what a cat is like when seas get a little angry.

All right, so it's obvious that much of my writing over the next few weeks is going to revolve around comparing this boat to our catamaran. Nobody ever goes from owning a catamaran to a monohull. It's unheard of, and for good reason it turns out.

Your Baba will be a better ride in 15ft square seas beating than a cat,and most newer monos too. The goal to cruising is to get the weather behind the beam, and wait out the bad stuff. I still stick with my cat after being in some real snot........i2f

I had read bumfuzzle but its been awhile, I'll have to go back and refresh my memory.
We were only looking at Gemini's because they have the shallowest draft and werent as expensive. ( could it be any smaller than the 30ft Baba we use now?? ...lol .) If we bought a Gemini we could still keep our monohull.... if we decide to step up to the 40+ cats then we have to sell her ..... she would be hard to let go.

the only thing i know about monos are they are like going into a cave. cant see out, and very small. the gemini is also very small inside, for a big guy like me it felt like a shoebox. i could not see myself living in either of those.

scoobert you have typed twice you are a big guy. Just how big that causes your restriction in a Gemini? I have been aboard a couple, and found them quite nice, and I am no slim Pickens.......i2f

We arent big people, just average. Thats funny.. they are kinda like caves arent they.... I agree I couldnt live on either. We live in a house on the Chesapeke Bay spring and summer, but if I can handle winters on a 30ft mono I should be able to handle a Gemini .... at least thats what Im thinking.

i visited a 42'TPI and could fit in walking normal. thats why i think the 410 is perfect for myself, as i understand the tpi 42 is just a lengthened 37. i am sure for mice a gemini seems huge. i read lots of good things on them. but i would take the gemini before any of the mono's i went on, and some were 50+ feet.
