Hymns about Sailing

There have been a couple threads about sailing songs and I have used Napster to download and create two albums of sailing songs.

I am looking now for hymns about sailing or the ocean. So far I have discovered the following: "I Feel the Winds of God today" "Let the Lower Lights be Burning" "Lord you have come to the Lake shore" "Eternal Father Strong to Save" "O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus"

Any other suggestions?

"A Shelter in the Time of Storm" is a another good one. If you download The Adventist's Hymn Book you will probably find more, I'm sure.

Here is a couple more: "Will Your Anchor Hold?" And "Jesus, Savior, pilot me."

And, of course, we can't forget the Christmas carol "I Saw Three Ships come sailing in On Christmas Day in the Morning."

Here is another couple. They are not hymns as such, but Newfoundland folk songs that have a religious overtone.
One is called "The Little Boats of Newfoundland."
The other one is "Petty Harbour Bait Skiff", which is a tragic true story of the sinking of a small boat and her crew.

Re: Hymns about Sailing

For me there is little more powerful than the one with the chorus 'for those in peril on the sea'

There is nothing upon this planet so humbling as viewing a mighty ocean and knowing its natural power is greater than anything imagainable

The hymn you refer to is "Eternal Father, Strong to Save."

Yes, the ocean truly is humbling. I live in Newfoundland and the often stormy North Atlantic is just a stone's throw away. Watching the rolling waves crash against our rocky shore and splashing 60+ feet in the air is an awesome sight. Many seamen have died in these treacherous waters. Yet it is the ocean and its bountiful riches which brought us to this island in the first place. We have learned to respect this powerful ocean and we harvest from her only when she allows us. Otherwise, we just sit back and marvel at her immense beauty.

Re: Hymns about Sailing

Today the U.S. Navy is 236 yrs old.

The Hymn:

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep,
Its own appointed limits keep.

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea! Amen.

Eternal Father, lend Thy grace To
those with wings who fly thro' space,
Thro wind and storm, thro' sun and rain,
Oh bring them safely home again.

Oh Father, hear an humble prayer,
For those in peril in the air! Amen.

Oh Trinity of love and pow'r,
Our brethren shield in danger's hour,
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them where so e'er they go.

Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea! Amen.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save
