Re: HURRICANE OR TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

I just started a thread on a related topic that was spurred by this storm, Hermine.

Contains some tips from BoatUS on preparing a boat to weather a storm in a marina.

Re: HURRICANE OR TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

Roughly, north of Cedar Key, west to Appalachicola or so, expect water levels 8-10 ft+ over MLLW. West of Appalachicola to the mouth of the Mississippi, expect water levels 1-4 ft over MLLW. Your holding tackle should be at least adequate to withstand 10-20 hours of very severe summer thunderstorm weather. While the weather should never be treated cavalierly, there's no reason, in this day and age of really good information, to ---panic? Like a good boy scout, be prepared, hunker down, and enjoy the show... Obviously, just my opinion though...

A good job our house floats! We've cancelled plans to sail to the Chesapeake's eastern shore on Sat/Sun and will instead hunker down on the west side, probably Annapolis.

Re: Hurricane or TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

I'm hoping everyone makes it through this storm safely. But, I'm also hoping for huge amounts of rain in my area.

One of my boats is currently hard aground where it was moored because they dropped the lake level, I assume, in anticipation of the rain. If we don't get it, I'll be screwed. I was going to put it on the trailer two days ago, but it won't budge now. This is the first time on this lake prior to a big storm like this, I wasn't expecting them to drop the level this much, this soon.

Re: Hurricane or TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

Just been called a hurricane!

Quote:

155 PM CDT THU SEP 01 2016

...DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT
HERMINE HAS STRENGTHENED TO A HURRICANE...

Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate
that maximum sustained winds in Hermine have increased to near 75
mph (120 km/h). Based on these data, Hermine is now upgraded to a
hurricane, the fourth hurricane of 2016 in the Atlantic basin.

SUMMARY OF 155 PM CDT...1855 UTC...INFORMATION
----------------------------------------------
LOCATION...28.1N 85.4W
ABOUT 115 MI...180 KM SSW OF APALACHICOLA FLORIDA
ABOUT 175 MI...285 KM W OF TAMPA FLORIDA
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...75 MPH...120 KM/H
PRESENT MOVEMENT...NNE OR 30 DEGREES AT 14 MPH...22 KM/H
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...988 MB...29.18 INCHES
I dont wanna be stupid with advice, but i was on a mooring as one went directly overhead a few years ago... And I can tell you their ain't nothing you can do in a hurricane. Its much safer to get the hell off the boat and find a bar.

So if you are in that landfall area please tie it up best you can and get off.

Its not being a coward to run screaming for the hills

Re: Hurricane or TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

The tropicaltidbits guy does a great job in his videos.

He's been talking about the separation of the mid and upper level lows for several days, since way back near Peurto Rica. One trailing the other until last night they circled each other. And I imagine will line up soon if they haven't already.

Opps, they just this moment said it's a hurricane now on the radio.

The latitude is already above my location. I've had two days of steady winds, not too strong. Thunderstorms last night, but even they are missing me today.

Hoping for the best for RTB, and all others up north of me. Hang in there.

Below is the graphic from the storm flight last night out of Tampa. They crossed several times to identify the locations of the two lows. Interesting graphic.
