Have Any Australian Sailors Seen or Heard from this Solo Circumnavigator in Distress?

I have a friend who is in a bit of a pinch right now on his way to Austalia. His boat capsized about two weeks ago and he is limping to port (possibly Melbourne, AU) under a jury rig. If anybody down under has seen him (or even talked with him on the radio), I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Info about his last reported position can be found by clicking here: Zpravy

LeftR, probably better to start a new thread for your request, this is one has a pretty much JW focus.

You're probably right ... BUT ... it seems to me that:

A.) Aussie sailors have an interest in this thread.

B.) If there is any chance that someone has seen or heard from my friend in the last week or so, it would be someone who sails out of Victoria or Tasmania, AU

This group of off-topic posts was removed from the Jessica Watson thread and placed in this new thread here in the General Sailing Forum. I hope the OP understands and that he receives the information he seeks.

Well, it appears that I failed to point out that Daniel Petrasek capsized in the Indian Ocean (Roaring Forties) leg of his Solo Circumnavigation while Jessica Watson was in the same general area during her non-stop unassisted solo circumnavigation. However, I don't take objection to having my original post moved from the JW thread, provided it will be read by it's intended audience (someone in a position to help find and possibly lend assistance if needed to a friend) ... but I do take issue with TaoJones referring to Joshua Slocum, Vito Dumas OR Daniel Petrasek as a "Cruiser".

If this is a "Cruiser's" log .... then I'm Barack Obama. CLICK HERE: Cesta3

And PLEASE .... change that word "OSSIES" to Australians. I DO NOT want to piss-off the same people I'm hoping will help me.

Leftroamin, the Aussies have a strong presence here, and are pretty darn sharp, they will not miss this post. I think that is why Tao felt confident to move it. I will say a prayer for your friend, have faith, that boat looks like she is a strong vessel. Have you made contact with the authorities? **Add a comment in your signature for all Aussies to click here, link that to this post. If ya need help doing this just let me know.

I'm sorry you have taken exception to my choice of "Cruiser" here on "Cruisers" Forum, but if there is some other description you would prefer, let me know . . . I'll change it.

Southern Indian Ocean - he would be limping to Perth or at least some point in Western Australia not Victoria which is on the Eastern side of Australia

Meyermm - His voice log put him 300 miles from Melbourne.

He had survived a storm which resulted in a capsize which broke the mast, his windgen being lost overboard and his liferaft being lost overboard.

He had jury rigged a mast, was under sail and was confident, in good weather and in good spirits. He reported plenty of food and water on board. He spoke of almost being in motoring range of Melbourne which I presume means he has aux power and should be able to generate electricity and communicate.

His reports even at the toughest times tend to be 3-4 days apart anyway. I am hoping that as he communicated his "good" condition on may 16, position west of Tasmania and his plan to head for Melbourne his next report will be when tied up.

With the short rig it's doubtful he'll make 100 miles per day but after 5 days it is time to start wondering. I haven't checked but he also reported Northeast Winds another factor probably slowing him with a short rig as he tries to get north.

Thanks ToaJones. I've posted this in the Cuisers Forum in order to reach as many Australian sailors as possible. I'm afraid that the sailing Solo Circumnavigator's Club is far too exclusive to have an effective website for posts such as this one.

I would prefer that you change "Ozzies" to "Australian Sailors" and "Cuiser" to Solo Circumnavigator".

My post was based on a later post by by the thread starter which said southern Indian Ocean. My point being a very large discrepency New York to LA type distance.

Done . . . and congratulations - that title uses all of the available space allowed for thread titles.

G'Day all,

In my many years in Oz, I've never found a single resident that objected to being called an "Aussie". It is not a pejorative term. There are many rude terms used to describe Aussies, primarily by Kiwis, that they DO object to. They often involve odd activities with sheep or 'roos. I think that it has to do with living upside down on the bottom of the world...

Cheers,

Jim and Ann s/v Insatiable II lying Bayview, NSW, Oz
