Re: Gulf Stream Crossing Weather

Those are pretty much prevailing conditions. Check NOAA forecasts, but without even looking I would predict seas 3-5 feet, which is really pretty good conditions in a powerboat, couldn't sail there with an easterly but power should be fine, again, check NOAA. Pete

Re: Gulf Stream Crossing Weather

I did check, and Pete’s right. Today is 10g15 and 3-5 becoming 4-6 at 9 seconds. Seems like a powerboat will act to shorten that period, and it won’t be much fun...

Re: Gulf Stream Crossing Weather

I have a little bit of experience with the Gulf Stream and Florida waters. But to be honest, like I said, those are prevailing conditions, if you want to wait for fairer conditions, you could be in for a long one, especially this time of year. In the summer, you can get flat, calm, still conditions on a regular basis, but in winter it is not too common. Well, good luck in any case! Pete

Re: Gulf Stream Crossing Weather

Thanks Guys.

Not expecting flat calm, but wondering if 10 kts out of the east will create "confused" seas. We can adjust our speed and angle to the waves and help stretch out the period except when seas are coming at us from several directions.

Re: Gulf Stream Crossing Weather

No, those won't be confused conditions, very regular. As you approach the lee of the Bahamas Banks, things will straighten out a lot too, the first half will be the "worst" (a.k.a, normal!). Pete

I CROSSED FROM BIMINI TO FORT LAUDERDALE IN EARLY DECEMBER. WIND WAS SOUTHERLY FOR 2 DAYS PRIOR. SEA WAS ALMOST FLAT AND HAD TO MOTOR MOST OF THE WAY.
