Re: Good Ideas That Have Gone Bad

Thought it would be fun taking my Dad, a motor boater fisherman, sailing. He didn't have the patience for sailing, while he was aboard the wind generator blades got broken twice. The dinghy motor was dunked in salt water. When the water pump went out in the main motor, he abandoned me, flew back home to go fishing. After that things were much more peaceful. Fixed the motors and went sailing.

Re: Good Ideas That Have Gone Bad

Another sailor once referred to minimizing bad ideas as "good stewardship. Not passing on a boat with PO problems. I've tried to be thoughtful in my changes and fixes.

  • Installed wooden cockpit grating without solving drainage problems (rotted in 3 years).
  • Used clear vinyl hose for a tank vent (kinked). Would have worked if fewer bends. 3/4" sanitation hose solved it.
  • Splices on lines that occasionally need untwisting. I don't like splices in tackles.
And I've fixed a lot of PO and OEM bad ideas. They've stayed fixed.

I can easily find where the PO's have been, all you have to do is look for duct tape, electrical tape and wire nuts, thankfully they didn't do much, but they did replace the bilge and fresh water pumps

I varnish to impress me. I just love seeing the natural grains bubbling forth.

Re: Good Ideas That Have Gone Bad

I though it was good idea to buy a water roof cover for a runabout boat. One thing lead to another and the boat ends up outside over winter. Lucky it as a water proof cover right? Well wrong, since it had a water proof cover I did not remove the drain plug. I could no check on the boat as it was 350 miles away. The cover blew off and the boat filled with oily water. That was 8 years ago Still I do not have it 100% leaned up as there is still oil stains in the upper corners of parts of the boat....no, I did not cry but came close....ugh
