Re: Give me Encouragement to Sail from Washington to SF

Extra long shaft outboard.

Not necessarily the outboard I'm worried about, as much as water intrusion.

My ranger 23 wouldn't heave to. Maybe it was the constant currents, I'll never know. Everyone said it would, but I couldn't get it to. I even took out two friends, one a racer, one a cruise and they said they would show me easily. They couldn't get it to either. As soon as the job got back winded it spin around.

This boat will be better. It has a much longer keel. Not full, but somewhere in between.

Re: Give me Encouragement to Sail from Washington to SF

NoB,

One Thanksgiving time in SF Bay, there was a storm. That was when Jim and I went out to see how Insatiable (the first) would heave to. And we couldn't get her to do it. Now this was a boat with perforated toerail. Eventually, Jim moved the snatchblock way forward on the toerail, so that the storm jib would really be backed, not just think it was on the other tack. That, finally, did work, along with playing with the main to get it right. As far as I know, that is the only way to get the data: to go do it.

It's nice if there's a hot shower waiting in a couple of days. You're out in the rain or spray or greenies, and you get soaked, sometimes through and through. In big seas if you kneel on the foredeck facing aft, your sea boots can fill right up with salt water--and they'll never be dry again!

Looking at that huge aperture for your outboard tilller, I'd suggest you seal it off for the trip, just don't use it till you're in protected waters. A small piece of bolt rope track above, glue on velcro for the sides and bottom, and put some clear pvc over the darned hole. Replace the gasket for the top of it, while you're at it, so the top seal is good. Does that area have drains to the outside, or do they go into the bilge? (Hint, hint.)

Lots to consider.

A.

This can be done. This is what sailboats do. I already have said, if it takes me two month and I stop at every harbor along the way and hole up, I'm willing to do that. I have the patience. Its going to be fine.
Tomorrow, I'll set out before daybreak on a 100 mile run between islands. And yes... I'll know ahead of time where every shallow and rock is located all the way along the route. I'll check the chartplotter or ipad continuouly to verify that I'm on course, ais will be turned ON, exact location will be documented and plotted on paper hourly and the radar will be monitored continuously.

Now I read that you only first looked at a chart late last summer and don't seem to feel the need to "know where every single rock" is located, and think you are ready to become a hero. Very interesting...

Navigation skills on the ocean is a discipline that is practiced and perfected... not something one is "born with." To believe the ability is innate is folly.

You've obviously never experienced fog off the coast.

Steady as she goes Capt Ken. This gent has captured the hearts and minds of most of the audience here who are always eager to help. Being helpful is a nice personality trait ... buuuuuuut ... .

I find that in every post he has some silly peacockish thing to say. Now we hear he ran this same game on CF last year. And I note he has 3 new similar threads on SailNet going right now:

Bristol 26 going to California. - SailNet Community

Really? Oregon, really? - SailNet Community

What do cruisers do? - SailNet Community

And he is the OP of many other threads like this one: Why don't boats have headlights? - SailNet Community

A short quote from 4 weeks ago on SN "... someday I'd like to do [a circumnavigation] myself, and no, I'm not one of those fly by night posters that gets the sailing bug in spring and quickly forgets... "

Sound familiar? There's an internet term for this behavior but with my advanced CRS, I don't recall the term ...

Now let me drag my hairy knuckles outa here. Ya'll enjoy the funhouse.

Yeah, maybe we have all be had by this guy. But wait BC and Mac- I have learned a lot from this thread and your experiences. And I think I going to that hot springs sooner rather than later. Ann gave me some hints about heaving too (although my current boat does fine). TS and jackdale taught me more about my local waters. Boaty is always good for knowledge that goes to any water.
Its all good.

Re: Give me Encouragement to Sail from Washington to SF

Take as many virtual trips down the coast as you can with GE,save images,it really helps when entering a port knowing how it looks.I have sailed down the coast twice.First time sailing south stopped every night and anchored or tied up somewhere, about 40 to 60 miles between hidey holes, never out more than 15 miles from shore.Had no problems at bars. That was in July. 4 a.m. starts are the norm, arrive by early afternoon. The last trip down in Aug.,sailed out of Neah bay direct to Port Orford,at Cape Blanco, was 3 nights passage.Mostly motorsailing in light fog. There's no bar there and easy to enter, not protected from south though. From Orford motored to Mendocino, then dealt with surfing conditions in 40 to 50 knots,18-20 ft seas till Drakes bay, took only 2 nights,3days,SOG was reaching 14knots.That was a long night!

You are the one trolling my post. If you don't like it quit posting. Everyone jumps all over me when they think I am ill prepared, but then when I have posts asking for advice that makes me a troll.

It's not like I'm trying to hide it, I started this thread by saying I asked over on Sailnet. What do your four thread of mine prove?

Bristol 26 going to California: My first one, once I had bought the bought.

Really Oregon: The recent one, once research led me to have doubts

What do cruisers do: Totally unrelated, just talking to people online about what people like to do

Boats with headlights: you would have to actually read it. I was just asking why it's not more common to carry a specific brand of flashlight.

I've been posting about wanting to cross an ocean for years, ever since I set foot on a boat, to me that doesn't make me a troll, it just means I have a goal, I just have not gotten good enough yet to accomplish. So....pretty much I'm doing what you all tell me to do, which is practice, and not go until I am ready, but then when you read from a year ago how I wanted to do the same trip, but backed out because I wasnt ready, it's a bad thing. Seems like I can't win.

What is peackokish? I will just leave this topic alone. Who knows who the advice is coming from anyways. Many of you just seem emotional.

Re: Give me Encouragement to Sail from Washington to SF

NoB,

I'm thinking about the way your boat is set up, with that large opening for the outboard handle. I am concerned that that is an unsafe set up to go to sea with, and a flap, like I suggested last night, totally not adequate to keep even one large wave out. This morning's concept would be to totally seal it off, a plywood board, painted, screwed over, and sikaflexed. And even that way, you'd have a job ahead of you to get into harbors.

I am now questioning whether this voyage plan you have is manifestly unsafe due to using a vessel for it where such usage is way more than it was designed for. If you doubt this, read up on what Herreshoff's design criteria were, and his complaints, if any, about how the builder carried through.

It is not that a pretty safe singlehanded voyage cannot be made from WA to SF, but that I seriously doubt if the vessel is up for it, and honestly, I do not think you will be ready in 2 months. But like Blue Crab said, it's your life, your destiny. Do what you think's right for you.

I'm thinking today that neither you are the boat are up to it yet, and that you don't have time to get both of you ready this year. It would be irresponsible of me to not say so.

Ann

OK.
here is the deal.
Quit talking about doing something.
Do it or dont do it.
If you have been asking since you were 10 years old, I can guarantee that the information you have been given is the same every time.

My opinion? You are not ready, not prepared and mentally unable to do this trip. Let me put it another way. DO NOT ATTEMPT IT. Your attitude and written responses do not indicate someone in control.

Its my opinion and you dont have to take it.

After reading through all your posts everywhere, you have all the information you require. ALL OF IT.

These seafaring folk who have given you advice are professionals. A couple of medics, one an emergency rescue specialist for 17 years active service, a few highly trained and skilled seamen, and a few people in the technical industry. We all sail to different levels of competency. Now, I wouldnt do it single handed. Others here would not either. My experience is far more than yours, and the others here are far more than mine. For us there is one thing we share that you have not achieved yet, and that is life experience. We know it can be done, but the risk probability is a high one and for me personally, I would sacrifice single handed for a two man crew if I had to do it.

newt is looking for crew on his boat. If he will have you, you could do a lot worse than learn at his helm. He will show you more in a few days than you will learn asking.

Crew Wanted: Annual trip up and down the Forgotten Coast. - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Dont get upset at us. We wont stop you doing what you want, but we wont encourage you either because you are not ready.

Take it or leave it.

Re: Give me Encouragement to Sail from Washington to SF

Forgive me, I may be a little nervous. I'm leaving Monday to launch the boat and start cruising. I think it's just hard to leave friends and family behind and I may be a little more touchy than usual. Want to make sure I've got everything ready. There's a lot to prepare, even not going offshore, just for extended coastal cruising. Do I have the right anchor? Did I pack too many clothes? Did I leave anything behind, plus goodbyes.

It's likely that I am just disappointed. I bought the boat with the intention of sailing to California after this summer. I may be having slight regrets of not just buying a boat in San Francisco. It's not like there aren't plenty.

With your outboard well I suggest you do what I did with my Hurley 22.. get some slightly flexible sheet rubber.. some 2x1 timber and drill some holes in the glass 1" in from the edge..
Cut the rubber so as you have 2" over the glass and a 1/2" overlap where the two edges meet in the middle..
Batten the rubber in place with wood either side.. this will allow you to move the OB up and down and though it wont stop water completely it will restrict it a helluva lot and also allow it to drain..
Still use the OB quickly if needed..
