Engine Alarm Question

The Volvo 2003 on my sloop runs beautifully. But recently I've experienced something unusual...at least to me. As I'm motoring along at 2400 RPM or so, the high temp/low oil pressure alarm starts to sound, but very faintly. But my oil pressure and water temperature gauges read exactly where they have always read at that engine speed. The engine is pumping raw water and when I pop the cap on the water filler tank, the water is not particularly hot. If I lower the RPM a bit the faint alarm sounding stops.


Any ideas? Thank you in advance for you input

Check the wiring first then if OK - Change the temp sensor - sounds like it is dying.

Why is the coolant water not getting hot? Sounds suspicious- thermostat, clog heat exchanger,.....

at some point my oil pressure sensor contact broke off (and alarm sounded). literally: the wires in the harness and elsewhere throughout my motor [a westerbeke 35cthree, circa 2005] seem a bit too stiff, so vibration is not their friend. the metal blade contact broke off at the base. had to replace the sensor, fixed the problem.

not saying yours is the same, but worth checking - simple and cheap repair.

This problem was cured on my 2003T from 1989 when I replaced the Printed Circuit Board in the instrument display 8 years ago. Unfortunately after an overheating incident where the alarm sounded so weak that it was overheard. Luckily the smell alerted me to the problem.
For safety's sake, get the board replaced quickly !
