Crappy Day............ turned great!

Sitting all day fighting off a nasty cold, and bored out of my mind. I placed a ad on Craigslist asking if anyone was interested in helping me move my boat. Most of my sailor friends are overseas right now. I was originally planning on going alone on the outboard for the 18 miles over to Little Creek.

I received a call from a gentleman who actually owned a Islander 26 and lives right in Virginia Beach a few miles from me. He said that he would like to help out. We are meeting on Saturday to go over everything at the marina. We will get underway on Monday if the weather is ok.

Looking forward to my first sail with instructions to boot!

I know it is small peanuts to most folks on here, but you will never know how much it means to me. I have already made a couple dozen new friends who just go out of their way to accommodate a newbie like myself. I am totally humbled by these good folks.

The majority of folks on here, despite the occasional spat are decent and know a fair bit about boats and stuff.
I wish you success and a good new friendship.

Your coming from Portsmouth, right?

As of now, winds are forcast to be out of the ENE at 4-6 mph. So take plenty of gas and go with the tide.

Have a GREAT time. We'll be looking forward to hearing how it goes. I've never forgotten my first sail. A couple of my buddies talked me into taking a sailing class with them. I thought it would be boring but after the first time I couldn't wait to go again. That was almost 40 years ago.

That is so great. It just shows how amazing sailors are and how willing they are to help each other. The kindness and generosity of sailors is one of the greatest things about this lifestyle.

Re: Crappy Day............ turned great!

We made the run from Scotts Creek over to the Little Creek Navy base today...... about 20 NM after you count all the dodging of container ships. I have another new friend in Cap'n Tom who made the trip totally uneventful. Had a great time dodging the containers ships and tugs towing barges. We didn't get much sail time in the 6 1/2 hours because the wind laid flat all day, but the little 8 HP Tohatsu pushed the old hulk along great. We kept the sails up so Tom could teach me how to react to the "tell tales" and the wind direction indicator. For me..... it was a bucket list kinda day. She is oficially tied up in her new home port which is about a 1/2 mile from where I will haul her out very soon for the bottom work.

Respectfully.........John

Sorry to hear that old hughey didnt play ball but glad to hear you had a good time regardless, one of the true attractions of the ocean is that the worst day on the ocean is still better than any other day anywhere else.

Good luck with her, use the resources here of past postings as well as new questions, were all learning, as they say, that what lifes all about.

Re: Crappy Day............ turned great!

Thanks for the photos and the report Snipe. Glad you had a good time and arrived safely. Motoring is actually a good introduction to your boat since the stress level is much lower. You'll have plenty of time to sail. Enjoy your new boat!
