Mosquitos love me and here on the east coast of the U.S. I find that it is impossible for me to enjoy the cockpit in the evenings at dock without drenching myself in DEET which I really hate.

As soon as all the necessities are taken care of this is the first luxury item on my list.

Yeah I'm with you with that, mosquito's really love me until I acclimatise too.

A friend over here makes really nice canvas work for boats (and is brilliant value), and I'll get him to do an enclosure for me.

Until then I have bought 3 x massive King Size bed mosquito nets (dirt cheap off Ebay from China - they seem pretty good too), and three bottles of Permethrin treatment for them. They are big enough to cover the complete cockpit, and once treated and dried out, are safe enough, and good for something like 30 washes or up to two years (the netting will fail by then).

I'll cut one down so it's a good size for the V berth, and the offcuts can do the ports, hatches, and companionway. The third is a spare.

In addition I am going to get some bug zappers to hang off the boom close to the mast, outside the cockpit net, and one for in the main cabin, so I can kill as many as possible outside, and any that get in will hopefully get side tracked before hitting a net or biting me.

Ooooohhh! PS. I almost forgot. A buddy was in a tank regiment, and used to go to Canada doing exercises a fair bit, and one of his crew suffered real bad with mosquitos, so what he used to do, was eat a clove of fresh garlic every day, starting a few days before they went off to Canada. Apparently it worked a treat (I must remember to try it).

Excellent ideas, Ribbit. I am going to check into those mosquito nets. I used Permethrin when we camped. I sprayed the curtains and bed spread in our teardrop camper with it and it worked like a charm. Any little buggers that followed us in at night didn't last long.

Either of those look good. On my boat, in the shower stall there is a 5 gallon container molded into seat that drains into the shower sump that looks like it would work for washing clothes. Plan to give that a try when I move onboard.

I feel I can almost always find a laundry close enough to a bar to warrant spending a few dollars to use the washer/dryers and be done with the few clothes I plan on having on the boat.

There we go. As long as we are talking about real luxury items, an electric washer and even a dryer have to be up there. A dishwasher too I should think.

Luxury has a different meaning for a smallish sailing boat. I feel I have all the creature comforts I have in my home.... except AC... Things are smaller, and it's like living inside an "upholstered cabinet". Apartment has painted walls... boat has varnished teak! We have a smaller frig... smaller sinks, smaller stove/oven... a tiny head/ bathrm with only a hand shower... but it all varnished teak... the bed mattress is perfectly comfortable... I don't watch TV... but we see vids and netflix on a laptop and monitor... no biggie. We have a small music system.... essentially a car stereo... We use the www via a smart phone hotspot of wifi when available. No printer or fax or copier...laundry or tub.

I feel comfortable and it seems normal and not luxurious. I don't feel as if I am camping... nor staying in a ***** hotel. It feels wonderful!

Well.... aren't some "luxury" items a bit over the top? I guess that's what we mean here... OK, I'll throw in a bidet! I have always wanted one of those! And a sauna! Oh, and a bath tub! I crewed on a big custom racer/cruiser once that had a big bath tub. Owner's wife considered it a necessity...
