Boat Luxuries

As I near my push off date my mind wanders to thoughts of lost land luxuries to be. More importantly my mind wanders to ways to still have them if reasonably possible. So it seems that the best starting point is to make a list of luxuries so they can be prioritized. So lets start:

- plenty of hot water

Water, Electrical generation (solar, wind, genset), refrigeration, washer/dryer, ice maker. Assumes you already have all the other necessities like robust ground tackle, sail handling, safety, communications (SSB, AIS)

Those I'd consider "very nice to have" (AIS) and "maybe" (SSB), but not necessities. Especially not SSB; that is just one option when it comes to communication.
AIS is indeed very nice to have and will make life much easier, but that doesn't make it a necessity.

Let's face it: a windvane (steering), a decent set of sails (don't have to be brand new, but obviously the better shape they're in the happier you'll be), 2 (2nd gen) anchors and a hand held GPS will get you where you want to go. Personally I'd add solar panels and sat phone as a minimum requirement, but your boat will do fine without those.

As far as water goes: after having so many people tell me I won't be able to bring enough water on my little boat, I started to wonder how all those people in the '70's survived sailing these boats with a crew of 2 (I'm only 1). Quick math:

2.5L per person per day and you can not only drink enough but even clean some dishes Let's say you're at sea for a max. of 40 days, that means you need 40 x 2.5L = 100L (26.5 gallon) per person. Anything over that I'd consider a luxury.

Greatest luxuries on a boat? A happy wife (luckily, that one I have), knees that don't ache, 6' arms with 2 elbows in each, pants that don't always seem 1" too small in the waist after eating, a large comfortable bathroom and a walk-in-closet. Oh yeah, and a hull that keeps the water on the outside.

AIS, I think that should be on the "extremely nice to have" list... SSB and Iridium phone... I'd put those on the "Very, very nice to have..." list. Is that a luxury? I think that Starbuck's mocha mix is a nice luxury. Smoked oysters, Bushmills and Sheep Dip, just to settle the stomach now and then...

You hit my biggie on the head. The endless hot shower. Everything else comes second. And I also found that in Central American countries missed clean tap water.

So, in my ideal world....a large water maker and a propane on demand water heater.

Oh, I'd love me a shower on board

But I only have a 90L tank and cold water using a foot pump, haha!
No room for a shower either. So sad. Do have a bag-shower on deck tho

Other then that, I can live happily on my boat on my own, but as soon as I have on or two guests ... aiaiaiai. So a little more room in general would be nice.

(I dated this tall guy - 6.2' - and I never really figured out how that would have worked with him on board long term ... Poor guy had to do boat yoga as soon as he stepped inside.)

Your luxury list starts with a boat not a floating tent! I feel bad for that guy, once the newest was overcome I'm sure it just became too much work! (pm me if you don't understand)
