A Cruising base?

A Greek island - yours for the price of a London flat.

Fed up with Britain's icy blasts and soaring house prices? Then why not bask in the sun and paddle the azure seas from the shores of your own Greek island. You may have to share living space with goats, but with more than 20 Greek islands for sale, Brits can live out their Mamma Mia! fantasies for the price of a central London flat.

Little Lesbos, an uninhabited 16-acre haven in the Aegean Sea, 200 metres from the island of Lesbos and described as "one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean" by real estate company Vladi Private Islands, is available for €800,000 (around £630,000).

Greek islands traditionally pass down through the generations, and this is the first time that Little Lesbos, which boasts clear water bays, sandy beaches and abundance of vegetation, has been for sale.

That name by itself will make an interesting conversation piece at any redneck party.
-Hey, Bubbah, where do you live?
-Hmm, uhh, umm...

Re: A Cruising base?

If Sir Richard Branson and Bear Grylls can, so can you!

Perhaps ownership gives one the right to call it what you wish. Here Are a few suggestions:

Troy

Atlantis

Shangri La

Goatland (not to be confused with Gotland)

Isle of the Living Dead (with annual Zombie film festival)

Nepenthe

Noman's Land (ref. Odyssey)

But on a serious note, what would be the running costs of such ownership? Taxes, bringing the water/electric in, security, etc?

After all 1mil dollars properly invested can pay for a heck of a lot of charters in those waters. Not sure if the island ownership is the right choice compared to just say 1-2 months per year worth of chartering there for the next 10-20 years.

Wouldn't that be same as the present name?

Wifey B: Don't knock the name.....bet it's a bi island.....

We like to look at islands for sale. Loads of them in the Bahamas, some in the keys, a few on up the East coast. Have no desire to own one but amazed how many there are and priced less than I would have thought.

Some like in the Bahamas have electric, but then a lot of them you just make it self sufficient. The problem is building and bringing everything there by barge. Just seems like when there are hundreds to visit, why limit yourself to one.

Wifey B: Well some wives like to take their hubbies to multiple islands, even Lesbos. I'm speaking of islands so don't you dare take that as ugly. hehe

It is not accidental. The term term "lesbian" originated from Lesbos. About 600BC this was the birthplace of Sappho, a poet with extraordinary talents .

A few years ago the islanders apparently unsuccessfully took the Greek Gay & Lesbian society to court to get them to remove the word "lesbian" from their name .

We were there a couple of years ago. One of those places charter yachts don't reach, so anchorages are largely deserted. The two big indented bays are a bit muddy, but the southern shoreline has some gorgeous spots.

Re: A Cruising base?

Lesbian roots aside.

Forthwith it will be known as the "Isle of Weavis". I will have the essentials for passing cruisers.

A Pub containing the Guinness and lesser beers. There will be Nectar of the grape and fine food.

There will be a small amount of docking facilities and a haul out centre just for cleaning and antifouling and emergencies.....but lots of anchorage and a huge dinghy park in front of the Pub.

Yes....... the Isle of Weavis will be by invite only for staying, but the pub will be open 24/7 including Christmas.

I envision a very short but interesting life if ownership should occur....
