Re: 2015 Another bad year in the Azores..?

I just get a phone call from Horta from Spanish Friends, they just arrive in Horta and they suffer the storm to, according to the conversation waves in the 10 meter range and strong winds. Glad they are safe, a Lagoon 62 with a good friend to is in the way to Horta to, no news at the moment but is in Schedule.... Each year we get the same stuff from folks returning Home to the EU, i hope this year is quiet...

On the left side of this image from the rescue video just below the crewman's visor you can see what a city-housing-block-sized wave looks like when it is breaking. This is a wide angle image which means objects in the background are larger than they appear compared to the foreground.

Here's what a green dye marker looks like as referenced prior from the same video.

Re: 2015 Another bad year in the Azores..?

Reread the thread. Tip of the hat to Boatie. Dude has a chill style and doesn't brandish. Y'all should pay more attention to what he says. Kenomac has been bugging me to write about my experience last summer since last summer. Polux asked for input from those had the experience.

I guess I just did.

Have a good life. Whatever you do, live it to it's fullest. Anything else is a waste of time and resources and those are too important to squander. Just don't be stupid about. You will be able to enjoy that much more and for that much longer. Gets me down when people die. I am very sad for their family. Peace.

Just one tip on this one.. even the best have their limit.. take as long as you can to reach it..

Interesting in not knowing where they are. When we crossed at least once a day we updated ShipTrak via our hf. we downloaded wx twice a day. We had friends and family watching.

and we still update ShipTrak in the med.

yes I had done that previously and no luck but I am quite sure the complete data is somewhere, probably not accessible on the net at least in a non restricted way. When you do your papers for the MMSI regarding radio and EPIRB (if I remember right) you have to fill all that data, including the brand of the boat and model.

Manca3 (USA) ungoverned. 2 crew saved.
Gandul (nationality?) Broken rudder. 2 crew saved.
Missy32 (Swedish). Tipping. They continue to receive assistance and direction. 2 crew.
Reves'do (French) fire and sinking. 4 crew rescued. One child later died from hypothermia."

It appears the Gandul is a home build catamaran according this post:
La Taberna del Puerto - Ver mensaje - Tragedia en las Azores

Google translate:
"Indeed is the Gandul Gustavo Diaz. I've done with him 3 races Huelva-La Gomera, and I can assure you that it is a type rather than experienced. The catamaran built it himself in his native Argentina to cross the Atlantic on the occasion of the celebration of the Expo 1992, where he was multitudinously received. It has several crossings of the Atlantic and as he told me, had suffered two temporary survival beyond the Patagonia, having to withdraw into the cabin to heave.
Fortunately they have saved my life, but lost their means of earning a living, now he was going pretty well."

The Manca 3 appears to be a Beneteau First 47.7

I've seen quite a few yachts named Kolibri but none had a Norwegian flag. She appears to be the Swan in the video.

I haven't seen anything on Missy 32.

Hopefully this helps a bit. God speed to the little girl that died and condolences to the family.

Thanks. Some interesting information even if on the case of the Kolibri (Hummingbird?) it is obviously wrong. That's the boat on the rescue video (Swan 44) and the mast is not broke and on the interview given by the owner no mast damage is referred.

– Aldri vært borti lignende - NRK – Sørlandet

Maybe a bad translation in what regards the owner saying that the top of mast touched two times on the water?

Regarding Gandul there seems to be some doubts. the boat is given as to be a Dutch one on several sources and you are obviously referring to an Argentinian one. Let's see who is wrong. I have tried to find information on Dutch sources and i could not find anything so maybe you are right.

Regarding the Manca 3 you seem to be right even if the US flag is a bit misleading since the owner does not seem American and most information about him is not in English. I will try to find more about that one.

Are you not kidding? The boat on the photo just arrived to Azores? Where did he find that "new" mast?

Re: 2015 Another bad year in the Azores..?

It seems like there is another one incoming along possibly similar track. Last nigh NOAA radiofax 48h drew it with its center passing below the chain.

I will look up how this morning gribs interpret the flow.

I hope there are not to many boats out there now because the wx does not look as if getting more manageable any time soon.
