Yes, it seems lurch/sheer is the best translation.

This little linguistic detour has teach me something and I found out a very nice tool regarding the translation of nautical terms between the two languages. Very useful. Here:
https://books.google.pt/books?id=4wR...dee%20&f=false

Just put the word on the book search engine and you got a fair translation of nautical terms.

We sailed this passage twice, both times in June: one time was OK (2006), the other time was fabulous (I will count this as an outlier). 2013.

Sure thing, 7 years is not enough to make any statistically valid conclusions. Just that in this particular period wx in June and July was fine while spring storms got very low and very nasty all the way into May.

Not any personal experience regarding that but with some considerable information by reading others accounts and posted or magazine/book articles about it, mainly in French.

It seems that in what regards French sailors the general opinion is that the best time to come back is from the end of May (after 20) to July. It seems also that the best thing is to go till Açores, be there exploring the Islands and make the last part of the voyage in July.

The Northeast Atlantic can be pretty rough in May or even in June. Much better on July, and regarding that i have some experience

A nice post in French:

MarkJ... if your going to do the S route of the W-E crossing.. head out the last week/end of Feb and once across the stream you should make good Easting till around 500nm from Madeira..
you should be around 600+nm SSW of the Azores by then so going a tad N will not hurt if forced to.. you should be fine just carry enough fuel to clear any calms to the N of Madeira as you run for the Straits.

Passing near Madeira than nearer Açores it will have less probabilities to find bad weather on Mars but it is frequent to have bad weather and strong winds on Madeira on that Month or nearby. I had that impression and I searched to be sure I was right and it seems so. I found notices regarding nasty weather on that region at that time of the year on 2007, 2010, 2013, 2015.

Maybe Mark will get lucky on the year....maybe not

The idea is not to go to Madeira.. rather to pass to its N..
Going there involves a lot of sailing to weather the last 4-500nm.. winds shift predominantly to the E-NE also one starts hitting SW setting currents..
Once the S'lies give out you step up (best way I can describe it) grab Easting whenever possible and stay S of NNE and you'll start picking up sling shots from any fronts going over the Azores.. pass both island groups midway..
by the time Madeira's due S you should be getting steady N'lies to take you to the Continent..
That's the theory.. but like everything in nature..

Re: 2015 Another bad year in the Azores..?

Btw, I never said I was going anywhere near Madeira. The plot is about 300nms south of Flores and about 250nms north of Madeira.

WEATHER DEPENDENT!

My idea is exactly as Boaty says... (or that's the theory )

And also, depending on the Aussie $ I may not be heading to Europe this year. I don't want to do it on a falling Aussie dollar.

And then it may be even worse in 2017..18...19... It's not like you are going there to buy a boat.

The Aussie dollar is at the same level with the Euro as it was at the end of 2009 and still stronger than at any time prior to then.

Can we please get rid of this stupid metric system while we're at it?

You know, go to civilised stuff:
12 pence = shilling
20 s = 1 pound
2L 10p = guin

On another thread a couple of days back I stated that looking at the weather for the next 7 days I'd be considering setting out.. correct that.. seems that in 6 days there's going to be NE winds from the Biscay across the Azores and down to the Islands.. do not remember this kind of weather.. just hope its gone back to W & NW by June..
Gonna be a bad year and hard sailing methinks

Re: 2015 Another bad year in the Azores..?

Down here in the Canaries after an unusually mild and dry winter we are having a rather cold spring with showers occasionally disturbing all those who started their varnishing too early.

Nothing irregular in our area except for Alex who was said to be a one in 50 event.

Boats going late to the Indies had smooth and easy ride. Some early ones took off from the Indies and some early arrivals are in the Azores already.

Here:
2016 Weather to the Azores - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

I am re-posting NOAA chartlets and some vague comments. Wondering if it will be possible to spot the first window in advance.
