Lightbulb Planning to cruise French Guiana and Suriname

Hi there,
I am planning to sail across the Atlantic with my family (including 2 children 9 and 11) Decmeber 2019. I plan to make land fall in French Guiana (from Cape Verde) and then sail onto Suriname before going north to the Carribbean Islands. Does anyone have experience of sailing this area French Guiana / Suriname in the last few years?

Thanks,
Vera

Our experience is eastern Caribbean. The most important thing to know is wind is East with very little +/- deviation. It is rare for any other direction. Speeds are 15 to 25 most of the time.

Re: Planning to cruise Grench Guiana and Suriname

The RCC Pilotage Foundation have a published a guide available as a free download here: https://rccpf.org.uk/pilots/145/A-Cr...ame-and-Guyana
In addition, the Nereids Rally: http://marinaslm.com/rally/Home.php has been visiting these places for the last few years.
Friends visited Guyana this year and had a great time.
Hope this is of use

Re: Planning to cruise French Guiana and Suriname

Many thanks Takamoana, Yes I have the RCC guide, seems very comprehensive, so far so good. Wasn't aware of the Rally - a good link, also had some links to a UK vessel who was sailing in Frean Guiana last year.
Be great to hear from anoyone who has cruised this area with kids.
Thanks again,
Vera

Re: Planning to cruise French Guiana and Suriname

Been a few years but did both on the way up from Brazil. Isle Du Salut pretty, but in general Korou was a bit of a dusty dump. Doubt if I'd bother next time.
Surname quite interesting, safe anchorage up the river at Domburg past Parimaribo. Would stop off there again if in that neck of the woods. Seemed safe enough, no problems in either but French Guyana felt a little bit sketchy. Easy 4 days up to Tobago, wouldn't dream of going the other way

Re: Planning to cruise French Guiana and Suriname

There is a Rally that usually goes to those countries. You can get the information from their web site: http://www.marinaslm.com/rally/

Unfortunately this year the Rally was cancelled because of pirate attacks off Guyana.
