However one interesting awareness: most of you assume that it’s all from a US point of view. But it’s not as the sailing world is much more colourful. I am from Luxembourg in Europe and will be full time liveaboard soon arriving from Cape Town. My experience while sailing the world was that the biggest group are fellow Brits, followed by lovely french and both even more away from the beaten tracks. Well Luxembourg is clearly not countable :-)

Now, Nelson, this precision brings a lot to the debate.
What are your plans when you make such a choice?
Are you planning on staying 24/7, year round, on your boat or do you plan to sail 6 or 8 months per year when the weather is fine, then go back to the US or Europe for Summer time?
It changes a lot you strategy.
If you're planning on leaving your boat away, they bring her somewhere safe.
And when I mean safe, I'm not talking some "hurricane hole" on the path of those.
Who can still believe in such BS? After the hundreds and thousands of boats destroyed in the past years in BVI or St Martin???
No, I'm talking far North (Virginia at the least), far West (Guatemala or Panama... but is it really safe for your boat and you? Not my choice), or not too far South (3 to 4 days sailing) in Aruba.
Your choice!

Re: Hurricane season in the Bahamas - a good idea?

Hi Reiki, with only 700.000 in our Luxembourg Nation, it should be noted when two are missing :-)
And thats the answer too. We will give up everything on land and we will be fulltime liveaboards - open end. We plan 2-3 season in the Caribbean/Bahamas before we will sail the Pacific to continue our circumnavigation.

Ok.
Seems a great plan!
And take cover for the worst 2 months (September/October)
Even if you've sold everything back in Europe, it could be a great opportunity to fly back to enjoy family and friends. Then I'll see you in Aruba

Hi Reiki,
with only 700.000 Citizen in our Luxembourg Nation, two being absent will be noted :-) And that’s my answer too, we will be full time, year around live aboards. The plan is to cross from Cape Town and sail the Caribbean/Bahamas for 2-3 seasons before heading to the Pacific.

Re: Hurricane season in the Bahamas - a good idea?

So much depends on experience, in the Bahamas, and with hurricanes. At this point in my life, I've had a lot of both, and cruising in the Bahamas during hurricane season doesn't worry me.

But, on the other hand, I look back, and know that making my first trip there in the summer, would probably have been a really bad idea.

Thanks for this point. I guess after sailing an one year Atlantic circle from/to Europe it’s not that bad with my experience. But there is always room for improvement
