Re: Florida to Costa Rica ?

I'm curious about where you can go on that side of CR? That whole area of the mainland , north all the way to Roatan etc is thought of as pretty dangerious. Limon maybe?

Why do you "need" a private boat ride? Why not travel by conventional means?

Curious about that myself.

How else do you get from FL to CR? You could fly to Golfito from somewhere but then you would be on the wrong side, it's a weird country.

Fly into San Jose, the capital on the central mountain range, and bus it over to the coast or rent a car. Or fly into Bocas del Toro, Panama (very close to Carib coast of CR) and cross at Sixola...a bit shorter land trip. Either way, be there in under 24 hours versus a week on a boat.

Why would one "need" to travel by private boat? "Want to", "build some sea miles", etc, but "need"?

There have been a few posts like this in the past, they usually end up smelling fishy. One guy who was on here soliciting rides and asking odd questions later made the news by stealing a boat and trying to skip the country in it and his kids...didnt make it far.

First the question was just from US to Costa Rica, not FL and didn't specify where in Costa Rica. That plus the fact that the request was so short and criptic does lead one to assume that he or she didn't care about where, just "needed" to get there.

Tens of thousands of people just get on an airplane and fly to San Jose every year and from there car, bus or puddle jumper flights to most major towns.

Like Belizesailor pointed out, not just the guy that ended up stealing a boat to skip the US, there have been a few other requests on the forum from people that needed to travel by boat instead of commercial carrier that ended up having an agenda that was either illegal or at least very shady.

The title of the post is "Florida to Costa Rica ?" So I took a wild guess and thought they wanted to sail from FL to CR. I've never been to Limon but I think it's the only place you can sail too on the east coast. There are airports all over the country but not with a harbor near by.

That is the title of the thread but the poster requesting a ride said only US to Costa Rica. Saw the same post in another thread that seems to have disappeared that also asked US to Costa Rica.

Since the request was very cryptic with no specifics: where, when, why it just seems potentially fishy. Could be totally above board but until the OP comes on to clarify no way to tell.

Re: Florida to Costa Rica ?

This thread reminds me of the thread started last year that asked for a private boat to take a person (and cat) to Hawaii from California, ostensibly because the person did not like to fly.

Who knows the reason for wanting to go by boat? Only the OP can tell us that.
_____________

Years ago I went to Limon Costa Rica (the port city on the East coast of Costa Rica). I got there by flying into San Jose (the capital and the largest city, located in the center of the country), and then taking an unforgettable day long trip to the coast by the famous "Jungle Train" (a light rail train).

Air tickets to San Jose Costa Rica from Miami are cheap.

Today you can purchase a one way, nonstop, 2 hour 50 minute flight, ticket on American Airlines from Miami to San Jose for just $95!

Miami to San Jose
Miami Intl. (MIA) to Juan Santamaria Intl. (SJO)
American Airlines Flight #2221
Economy / Coach
Boeing 737-800

Hope that helps.

Re: Florida to Costa Rica ?

Not one mention in this thread about the dangers involved to sail from Florida to CR. Depending on the route chosen you're either sailing off the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua OR Venezuela, Colombia, and the Darien Gap of Panama. These waters can be very dangerous. Pirates, robberies, and murders have increased significantly in recent years. Watch your back and be careful to look into the sun at sunset or sunrise to see em coming at you. Be well armed with whatever arms you have. Good Luck.

That was kind of the point of my post, the dangers involved in sailing to CR. This is a 2009 thread and it was dangerous then for sure. The western side of CR is pretty wonderfull.

I never noticed the original post date HAHA. I've been all up and down both coasts of CR. Beautiful place!
