Yup, Campobello is very quiet but lovely and the Roosevelt's place is an interesting visit- you can truly feel the history there. As I suspect you know, Lubec and Eastport are quite a different take on the working Maine seacoast town from those more sw. I like that.

Re: Best cruising East Coast of North America

interesting discussion. I've sailed from chesapeake to newfoundland, and live in nova scotia. A lot of people mention water temperature and climate. A note for those who are not familiar with the range of climate in nova scotia - once you go into the Bras d'or lakes or southern Gulf of St Lawrence, the water temperature is different. There is much more range between winter and summer, and although it takes a while for it to warm up, the water temperature is pretty decent in the summer. i often peaks around 70 to 75F, and in my cove in the bras dor i can get to high 70's in the heat of summer. fog is rare. Prince Edward Island claims 'the warmest salt water north of the carolinas'. This changes dramatically once you get to the atlantic coast - much cooler water and lots of fog and sea swell, simlar to Maine. likewise, the north and west of the gulf of st lawrence is relatively cold and foggy. The explanation is prevailing westerlies, which blow the surface water offshore, to be replaced by upwelling cold water. in the gulf, surface water collects in the south and east of the gulf. The Bras d'ors are a mostly closed off body of water, but slightly warmer on the eastern end than on the western end. maybe just climate trivia, but for me, i make sure i have more warm clothes when i head out of the bras dors into the atlantic, but when i go to PEI or the magdalens in the summer, it is a whole lot warmer.

Btw, I've only done the south coast of newfoundland by sail, but i have to say that it is truly spectacular. Stunning Fjords, outports without cars, culturally unique, incredibly welcoming. Its only about 90 nm from the Great Bras dor gut or Sydney, so its an easy go for anyone hopping up the coast.

Doug,

Once you run up the Straits and get past Bell Isle it can get sone seriously cold water as the Labrador Current carries South.

When we sailed up beyond Nain, Labrador we were joined by bergy bits (tiny icebergs) in several anchorages, and more than once had to dodge them on coastal passages. It was fun to chip off a bit of iceberg for our evening libations. It was eerie to be in the fog and have the temperature suddenly drop, indicating a nearby big berg. Not much swimming in Labrador!

Re: Best cruising East Coast of North America

I have never regretted any cruising done in the Eastern Caribbean. It matches what I have enjoyed in New England. Access to the Caribbean is a bit more challenging than it is for me in New England, though.
Cruised the US East Coast as a kid in the 60s. It was pretty cool then and certainly is today.
