Re: vanuatu earthquake

Right.... so a volcano just erupted, earthquakes are a daily occurrence.... and strangely, none of this came out on my recent thread about teaching in Vanuatu...

Anything else you think I should know, in the interests of full disclosure? :^)

Re: vanuatu earthquake

Well, Santa Maria island is a worry.... there's a big lake sitting in an old caldera of a still active volcano. If the bottom of the lake collapses letting all that water hit the lava..... Krakatoa..

ahh, well, Matt, you ARE aware that cannibalism may still be practiced in the interior highlands of Malacula and Santo... aren't you???

The last officially noted case was in the sixties, but there are rumours...

Seldom reaches the classroom, though... you might want to consider not assigning too much homework...

And if the locals invite you to go bungee jumping, my advice would be to pass.

That's bad news for me, I could feed a family for a week or more.

No worries, Matt. I also heard that there was a Vegan missionary having some success in those areas!

Jim

You "heard". When did anyone last "hear" from the aforementioned missionary?

Does a vegan missionary end up as the salad course I wonder?

We've been anchored in William's Bay (aka Dillions Bay), Erromango for the last few days. This is the largest village on Erromango. We are the only boat in the anchorage. The locals said they felt a pretty good jolt from the quake, but no damage. Really friendly people and a fascinating culture. The bay here was renamed to William's Bay in 2003 to honor the first mission eaten here.

Re: vanuatu earthquake

I do constantly hear good reports about the people of the island group.

I do hope I can make my idea of teaching out there work one day.

Just getting my head around the earthquakes, volcanoes and cyclones. None of which have featured in my day to day life up to this point in time.

I assume I will adjust.

Has David got his yacht club going yet? He's a great guy, we gave him a stack of cutlery for the club.

No, there's no sign of a YC, even by Vanuatu standards. We did talk with both chiefs, who each mentioned a YC for yachties to hang in.

Strange, because about 5 years ago it seemed near completion. An impressive building made from home made breeze blocks with an iron roof and nice views over the bay. An incredible amount of work had gone into the terraced gardens too.
Pity nothing has come of it.
