It seems that also =SILLY WARNINGS= section on products should be read, for safety

Warning fatigue. Like when motor oil says not to drink most people can skip that one.

Many DOT's would use linseed oil and kerosene mix to protect wooden bridges. It worked great, but of course kerosene runoff not so good for the fishies.

We have friends whose house (many years ago) burned after leaving a polishing rag on the dining room table overnight.

Diesel or other hydrocarbons auto ignite given opportunity. Short version from a search.

“Spontaneous combustion of oily rags occurs when rag or cloth is slowly heated to its ignition point through oxidation. A substance will begin to release heat as it oxidizes. If this heat has no way to escape, like in a pile, the temperature will rise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and ignite the rag or cloth.”

In the Caribbean in the hot dry season piles of grass and debris will ignite given a dense pile in direct sun. We have seen these fires on Dominica and Antigua.

E-bikes, surfboards, Hookah, Tesla Power wall, etc.

LiFePo is pretty much immune and is ABYC approved.

Makes one wonder why dangerous lithium chemistry is still in use. Why hasn’t the insurance business put their foot down on this?

Not only in the Caribbean. England is not exactly renowned for its tropical sun, but that's where a compost bin full of grass clippings caught fire spontaneously one night, right against my friends' neighbouring house.

+1, simplest and safest solution.

Re: Fire on Board - I know you know, but....

I’ve been on several fires over the years from polymerizing oils like linseed oil. We actually had one in our app bay when someone mistakenly wadded up and threw a soaked rag into the flammable content bin that was left out to harden. A admin found the bay charged with white smoke! It isn’t limited to just BLO, most penetrating , non water soluble woood stains contain very high % of BLO and will cause rags to combust. A fire I went on was the cause of this when the owner knocked a gallon can of it onto the floor, he cleaned it up with rags and paper towels and by about 3am it combusted and really messed up his basement garage with his family sleeping above it. They were very lucky.

Long time recommendation for linseed rags is tightly sealed metallic container without too much excess space; no O2, no fire.

Your putting off the what needs to take place, oxidation of the oil so it hardens and becomes a non hazard. Put it n a can, put it on the shelf, forget what’s in it, open it up and throw away….the rags start to oxidize and generate heat.

This. covered metal container. Container should be snug so it won't get knocked ajar.
