Re: 52ft custom metal, ketch rigged sailboat

Due to some health problems, I'll have to sell the boat asap . I would consider any offers above $50k. Asperida is still, sound and ready in Monkey Bay Marina in Rio Dulce, Guatemala. The list of the included equipment from the beginning of this listing is currently a little bit shorter but all the essential elements are still there . If I make any pre arrangement with the potential buyers, I will fly there to show the boat, preferably in the December. $50k is a very low price for a boat like that (I have paid more for her hull alone, 18 years ago). If you are interested or if you have any questions please contact me by PM.
Thank You

Re: 52ft custom metal, ketch rigged sailboat

I am on the other side of the world so not a buyer, but there is something about this boat which really appeals to me. And it's not just the copper/nickel hull, which would outlast all of us. Mind you, it would have cost an arm and a leg to build too.

Tristan,
Sorry to hear you are having medical issues and are forced to part with such a lovely and well equipped SV.

Is Asperida still available?
She would be a perfect fit for our family!
Please email nwbfinancial@gmail.com to communicate faster.

Thank you,

Well known and published Asperida is for sale. Designed by Van der Meer was built in Holland in 1967 as a research project for the Institute of Metallurgy of Alabama University . The goal was to find the perfect material for the boat building. The hull is made of solid 4 mm thick copper-nickel alloy UNS C71500, which is supported by a 6 mm frame made of the same alloy. I'm not going to repeat tons of information easily available on the Internet and the discussion groups about this boat. I'm the sixth owner and in the years 2001 to 2013 I've completely rebuilt the whole interior and reequipped the vessel. Asperida currently is in a marina in Rio Dulce , Guatemala . This is a beautiful, safe and cheap place to prepare the boat for the farther adventure . It is possible to stay in the same slip after the ownership transfer. It costs only $210 a month and the place is hurricane safe. There is a big workshop with a lot of power tool in the marina. The boat is documented with the CG and also registered in the state of Florida. I hope to get for it around $150k but this is off course a subject of negotiation.

Description:
Starting from the bow, the first compartment, a fore pick, is separated from the rest of the hull by a stainless steel watertight collision bulkhead. The access there is through a heavy duty hatch from the deck . It's used as a storage for the chain, some anchors and some not very often used sails. The next behind the bulkhead there is a crews cabin . There are 4 single bunks on two levels. Under the lower beds there is a large storage. Going aft , on the port there is a head with a toilet, sink and a shower. A large storage cabinet is located on the starboard side. Next, behind the door there is saloon with a large foldable table and settee which can serve as beds for two people. From the saloon there is an access by the companionway to the pilot house and the cockpit. On the starboard right behind the salon there is a galley with a huge, deep double sink, washer/ drier, stove and freezers. There is plenty of counter space and storage. On the port side there is an large engine room where besides all the machinery there is a large workbench and a lot of storage for tools and spare parts. Farther aft located is the owner cabin with plenty of cloth storage, large head, one double and one single bed. The last compartment is an aft pick also separated from the rest of the boat by watertight bulkhead . Besides steering rams and pumps , there is the waste tank and the vacuum pump servicing both toilets inside. It is also used as a storage for a spare dinghy and other equipment

Asperida is not a fixer upper but o that size of boat with this number of the equipment there is always something to do. There is a lot of wood on the deck which in tropics has to be re varnished pretty often but considering the cost of the local labor it is not really big deal .

Re: 52ft custom metal, ketch rigged sailboat

I'm going to hustle hard all year to see if I can pull off a miracle and amass enough funds to enjoy that beauty. Though it's unlikely, it doesn't hurt to dream lol. I might just be able to make it happen. How did you come by it?

Re: 52ft custom metal, ketch rigged sailboat

Hi Tristan - I’m interested in your boat - can you tell me what material the deck is made of ?

Also, is she ready to go to sea, or does she have a jobs list to complete before she sails ?

And, who do you get your insurance through, as I have been speaking to UK insurance brokers today about potential insurance and they’ve never heard of copper nickel boats and are somewhat dubious. I’m thinking that a future buyer would be better off staying with an insurer who knows the boat and her history.

You can email me at jo@deephealing.co.uk

Thanks very much
