Weak hydrometer reading: what happens if...

you add sulphuric acid to the cells? Would it not strengthen the electrolyte?

Well yes it would but that won't help the battery regain charge.

The sg is just an indicator of the chemistry of the the + & - plates. A discharged battery has a different chemistry than a charged battery, the charge is not a direct function of the sg of the acid.

Tell doesn't permit a fuller explanation right now but I'm sure other will chime in or google will help.

Don't add acid..just water when needed, preferably distilled water. Consider equalizing your battery/batteries, might bring some life back.

If you add acid then the sulphate that is sitting on the plates will harden there instead of turning into acid as the battery is charged
