GFCI tests the difference in voltage between the neutral and hot sides of ac current. They will work even without a ground. It is a Good Idea to have GFCI or even the newer versions on your stuff.

Zil, you are providing innaccurate info here, from your post it is obvious that you are not qualified to advise on this subject. I wont go into all your misinformation, but the type of trip device you describe is a residual current detector (RCD) not a ground fault detector.
Also the test you suggest is basic and suggests the fault is in the ground wire. That is incorrect, the ground wire is not the fault, (it might show the fault) however, the fault is other than that.
This is a dangerous fault and it can be difficult to locate, it requires a qualified person to trace and repair it.
