Honda 2000 wat generator vs yanmar with 150 amp alternator

I know this is kind of a silly question but here goes any way....so I have a yanmar 3gm30f I was eyeing up the 150 amp Balmar alt with pulley kit and external regulator. I was trying to put in prospective what kind of energy that is. my question is would that in essence make my engine able to power a 30amp ac circuit provided I had an inverter? Just like the Honda 2000? If the alt is rated at 150 amps at 14v that’s 2100 Watts right? So basically its just missing the inverter and the outlet? Minus the wear on and load on the motor etc. from a numerical standpoint... I’m kinda just thinking aloud here and was wondering. Since the generator is 800$ and the alternator kit is 1700$ if that battery banks were charged and all that good stuff could my motor moonlight as my genny if needed to run big ac loads for an hour or 2 once in a while?the theory of it interests me

Well, the numbers sorta add up. In optimistic way.

Alternator running flat out. Ideal rpm on the pulley, probably around 1500-1800 on the engine, guessing. Will it maintain that for a couple of hours? Alt heat up? Would it give max amps if voltage is up there? Don't know, maybe the load would dictate.

I'm curious what others say.

I have a Delco 120 amp to try in place of the Hitachi, same engine as yours.

The only real problem here is that the alt won’t produce 150 amps continuously without overheating.

I’d bet 75-100 will be about all you can hope for continuously without burning up.

Re: Honda 2000 wat generator vs yanmar with 150 amp alternator

I’ve heard you can power the Dometic 12000 btu with a hard start kit and a hond 2000 .I’m eventually thinking I’m gonna try to run the ac for an hour or 2 off the genny. ( haven’t gotten either yet though) but that led me to the lines of thinking if I was steaming for an hour or 2 and had the 150amp alt and an inverter could I run the ac while under power If I isolated my battery bank? I’m not planning on trying to use the battery’s to power the ac.

The Honda generator only provides 13.3 amps anyway, even the "companion" model with a 30 amp outlet only has 13.3 amps to that outlet. That's the rated output.
What are you trying to run ?

You need the batteries connected to the alternator to help with the load, to act as a buffer, and to prevent from frying the diodes on the alt.

What are the running watts of your air cond? Or how many amps is it pulling once settled in and running?

Ok silly me the companion model is different then the 2000? I’ve seen the companion model on sale for 699 and thought it was the same 2000 watt one I see on jobsites

I’ve got a non working 12000 btu ac I was looking to replace it with a newer one from defender the webasto 12000 btu ones are rated at avg 8.5 amps I don’t know what the pump draw off hand. Locked rotor amps are 61! I assume the hard start kit will help the initial start up load. The numbers seem close but I don’t know enough to make an educated decision

Re: Honda 2000 wat generator vs yanmar with 150 amp alternator

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer:

The Honda 2000 is rated for 1600W continuous.

A standard alternator cannot be expected to generate its rated output for a long period of time. A high output, large case * alternator is generally designed to generate its rated power constantly at a rated speed, usually 6000RPM (which is likely to be around 2400 engine RPM) . So with your engine running at an appropriate speed, you should be able to get around 2000W (150A x 13.5V) with the appropriate alternator and pulley system. (*Note: Not all alternators are born equal )

So an appropriate inverter and 150A alternator should easily meet or exceed the output of the Honda generator if you run the engine at high enough RPM.

Caveat: running for long periods at say 2400 RPM with a light load is not good for a diesel engine (That alternator will draw less than 3HP). .

Re: Honda 2000 wat generator vs yanmar with 150 amp alternator

The Balmar ho alternators are rated in the eye of a marketing guy. They fail to state any number that represents even vaguely what they will continuously produce. These output numbers are closer to a scam than anything useful. My 110 amp is good for about 80 amps with a duty cycle of maybe 30mins in an hour.

Key words look like “appropriate”, and “large Case” should be your takeaways here.

The 2 models of Honda 2000 are the same except one has two 15 amp outlets and the companion model has one 15 amp and one 30 amp.

Relevant thread http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=193270

Note that an AC genny has already converted energy at least twice before you then do it again with a charger.

If you primarily work off DC power using DC devices, a DC generator will be much more efficient

But if your big loads are AC and you run the genny primarily to power those, the battery charging is a sideline, obviously get an AC genny

The 2000w gen still needs an ac charger or its useless . Maybe run an 80a charger off it. Another $800 bucks for charger. 80a vsr 150a

Any one know any good alternative$ to the balmar 150 amp? Also are there DC powerd air conditioners?
