Going LEDs

Dear All,

I am thinking about changing my interior lighting + anchor light from standard filament bulbs to LEDs. Aside from buying the correct LEDs which will fit my current lights, do any modifications need to be performed to the wiring of the boat to use LEDs or is it just plug and play? I am on a 12v system. Are there LED brands which are better and offer better lightning characteristics?

LEDs just need correct wiring. On my last boat I found a number of lights that were wired backwards.

good-god-yes some are better than others! For anchor lights and whatnot the OGM is freaking amazing. It is also very high priced. I had one on my last boat and at a busy anchorage it was always the brightest light by far. All while using next to no power. Indoors I really like the sensibulbs from sailors solutions.

Sesibulbs beat anything else I've tried on the market, hands down. Daily liveaboard/sailing use for a year and a half with no complaints.

Yes I bought sensibulbs from sailors solutions for the most of the inside boat 5 years ago and in that time a few have went bad, I e-mailed Sailors Solutions and they happly replaced them free, 2-3 days later!! #!

I picked up a handful of these in home depot for $8 each. They are remarkable and I am replacing the rest of our dome light bulbs with them. Not as warm colored as sensibulb, but definitely a warm color. They throw a very wide beam, which I was having troubles finding in replacement leds, including the sensibulb. And they stay cool, where the sensibulbs get very hot.

I replaced my interior G4 halogens with 12 of these about a month ago;

G4 9 LED Bulb - 2.16W

They are brighter than my halogens and all 12 of them on draw about the same as one halogen. I can't speak for lifetime yet, but they are quite cheap for LEDs this bright. They are also rated to 28 volts. Most inexpensive LEDs are rated only to 14 volts which can be a problem during a battery charge.
