Charging 48v battery bank with solar panels

Hi,

I have a 48v battery bank and am looking to install roughly 300ah worth of 12v solar panels. Does anybody have a recommendation for a charge controller which can take a 12v PV array and charge a 48v bank?

Cheers,
Hank

Hank,

Something's awry with your figures. A 48 volt battery bank on a 27' sailboat? Why? Did you really mean 48 volts?

Also, 300 amp-hour panels? Panels are generally rated in watts (volts x amps), corresponding to the maximum amount of power they can supply when in bright sunlight.

Wanna try again?

solar

G'day,

I've got the components after much research but not yet put it together so others may give better advise. (just had to go sailing away from the winter mths) I went for the outback MX60 controller & 2x40v panels.(used for house / grid installations) for 400w hoping for 300w usable. The MX60 can take up to 160v o/c input & the output adjusted to suit 48v . The higher input voltage means lighter wire. (but the MX60 is as heavy as anything made to mil specs 1970!!)

Most modern panels out out much more than 12v. There are many now that put out more thant 48v. Get those panels, and a blue sky or Outback controller, and you are set.
